CHYULU HILLS NATIONAL PARK
The park is located in Makueni district, Eastern province and Kajiado District, Rift valley province; 150 km South-East of Nairobi. It was gazetted in 1983, since then it has been referred to as the Hemmingway’s “Green hills of Africa”
Chyulu Hills Park covers an area of 741 sq km, comprising of rough grassland and thicket depicting the graceful montane forest along the spine of the hills.
Generally, the park is characterized by hot and dry climate.
Biodiversity
The park is a habitat to a variety of large mammals such as Elephants, Giraffe, Eland, Buffalo, Leopard, Bushbuck, Warthog, Mountain Reed buck, Steinbok and over 300 native Bird species.
How to get there.
By Air: the National park has 2 Airstrips.
By road: A 4WD car is vital all through out the year; considering the regular rainy days and nights as well as the rugged terrain nature of the landscape .From Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, drive 150km along Nairobi-Mombasa road.
Accommodation
Here is a 3-bedroom guest house called, Kiboko strategically set in the park premises.
The first bedroom has one double bed, the second bedroom has one single bed and the third bed also has one single bed. However there is also a provision for alternative accommodation.
Kiboko guesthouse has one bathroom with shower and WC, an open-plan dinning area, a well furnished sitting room and a well-equipped kitchen with Crockery, Cutlery, Utensils, Glasses, and Stoves.
Alternative Accommodation
Numerous accommodation facilities exist in the un-gazetted portions of Chyulu hills and near Tsavo West National park.
There is a self-catering KWS guest house outside park premises off Nairobi-Mombasa road, located just 50 km from par headquarters.
In addition, there are 3 public camping sites in Chyulu hills national park. One campsite is at Kathayo park headquarters, kws campsite is outside park boundaries while the third is located near Kiboko guesthouse.
Note
The park is accessible all year round; open daily, 6:00am-7:00pm including public holidays.
No entry is allowed on foot.
After 6:15pm visitors will not be allowed entry.
Attractions
• The hills
The Chyulu hills are one of the most recent volcanic mountains, formed 500 years ago. You will enjoy the scenery of volcanic ash cones and barren lava flows.
• Mammals such as elephants, Giraffe, Buffalo, mountain reedbuck. Watch out for the tree-climbing Leopard!
• Rare forest Birds including the Hartlaub’s Turaco, Sun bird, White-eared Barbet, Stripe-cheeked Grenbul and the endangered Abbot’s Starling etc.
• Shetani Caves and Lava flows. Come and explore the tat-like lava that spewed down the hills, bursting out of the plans to create lava tube caves 500 years ago.
However, caution is recommended to explore them.

Park management provides caretakers, Mosquito nets, Kerosene lamps, soap, towels, Bed linen, and Toilet tissue to guests.

• Sun hats, sun glasses.
• Cameras, Binoculars, guide books.
