Meru Kora Safari Kenya National Parks

MERU & KORA NATIONAL PARKS.
The two sister parks are the most geographically diverse parks in Kenya, utterly unspoilt; ideal for wildlife experts and safari professionals.
The sister parks feature luxuriant jungle, coursing river, khaki grasslands, verdant swamps and gaunt termite cathedrals.
It is import to note that the parks are part of the semi-arid zone receiving irregular rainfall; wet seasons of April-June and November-December.
The park is mainly dominated by thorny bush land, wooded grasslands, open grasslands and riverine forests of Raffia palm and Doum.

Meru National park
The park is located 366-914 meters above sea level in Meru District, Eastern province; 348km north-east of Nairobi. Meru par covers an area of 870 sq km and was gazetted in 1968.It is a classic savannah landscape, defined by the rivers that make its boundaries. River Tana in the South, River Ura to the south-west and River Rojeweru to the East.

Wildlife
The sister parks are a rich diversity of habitats including the Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Cheetah, Buffalo, Lesser Kudu, Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe, Hartebeest, Gazelle, Oryx, Gerenuk, Defassa, Water buck. Reptiles include; python, puff adder and the cobra,
Birds
There are over 300 Bird species including the Long-tailed sunbirds, black-billed sunbirds, Herons, Ibis, African fish eagle.

Accommodation
Meru national park has lodges, tented camps and self-catering accommodation.
Elsa’s tented camp
The camp offers 9 cottages made up of stone and grass thatch, swimming pool, international cuisine.
Leopard Rock Lodge
The lodge is set overlooking the Murera river, it offers African and international cuisine, swimming pool.
Self-catering Accommodation
The park also has a provision for self-catering Accommodation including Bandas and camping sites.
Murera Bandas
There are 4 simple stone Chalets each with 2 bedrooms, located close to Murera gate.
Bwatherongi Bandas
There are 4 simple wooden Chalets,2 with 2bedrooms, 2 one bed roomed, located 22km from Murera gate in proximity with Bwatherongi river.
Camping
There are 2 campsites; the special campsite and the public campsite.
The special campsite
These campsites are seasonally located along rivers; they do not have facilities and should be booked in advance on an exclusive use basis.
The public camping site
Located 18km from Murera gate, on the stretch of open ground besides a wooded stream.
Provided are showers and lavatories.

-Game attractions like Lions, Cheetah, Buffalo, Lesser Kudu, and Oryx
-Birds such as African Kingfisher, Ibis
-Rivers including; River Ura, River Tana, River Rojeweru.
-Plants like Acacia specie, thorny bush land, wooded grasslands, open grasslands.
-The plains i.e. the northern and southern plains.

What to take with you
• Camping and Picnic equipment for visitors intending to stay over night.
• Plenty of drinking water
• Binoculars and cameras
• Sun hat, Sunscreen and sunglasses
• Anti-malarial prophylactics and insect repellent
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Guide books.
• Adequate fuel as the last fuel station is at Maua, a distant place from the park.

Kora National park.
Kora is a sister park to Meru, the adjoining park is known as the home of naturalist George Adamson.
Located at an altitude of 250-440 meters above sea level in Tana River district, Kora national park covers a total area of 1787 sq km and was gazetted in 1989.
The park is dominated by Acacia bush land, bordered by Mwitamisyi River to the South-east, a habitat for lizards, snakes, Tortoises and Crocodiles.

Note: There are no accommodation facilities in Kora national park, visitors use accommodation facilities at Meru national park.
Open: daily, 6:00am-7:00pm including pubic holidays.
No entry is allowed on foot.
Visitors will not be allowed entry after 6:15pm.

Entry
Entry is paid by cash acceptable only in Kshs or US$.

How to get there.
• Kora national park
By road: A bridge across the Tana River leads from Meru National park into Kora national park at Adam’s falls.
• Meru national park
By Air: The park ha several Airstrips.
By Road: take a 348 sq km Nairobi-Nanyuki-Meru route to the park’s main gate Or, take a 320 sq km Nairobi-Embu route to Ura gate. This route is not favourable during rainy seasons
