The City delights in glistening white buildings with incredible architectural beauty. It has distinct modern and historical areas and boasts a population of more than 3.5 million people.
Algiers features a Mediterranean type of climate with warm summers and mild winters. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea aids in moderating the city’s pleasant weather. Algiers is however considered to have the highest cost of living in the whole of North Africa.
Getting There
Most international flights to Algeria touch down at Houari Boumediene Airport, situated 20 km southeast of the capital, Algiers. The beautiful basilica, featuring a statue of the Virgin and walls filled with many small memorial plaques, was founded in 1872. The statue was crowned as ‘Queen of Africa’ by the Pope. This symbolic and religious building was designed by Jean Eugène Fromageau, an Algerian architect.

Nestled within the Djebel Babor Mountains, Djebel Babor Nature Reserve is a protected area in northern Algeria. Known for its breathtaking mountain scenery, the reserve consists principally of Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests, an eco-region found in the high North African mountain ranges. It changed status in 1985 from being a national park into a nature reserve. This unique eco-region is a prefect habitat for the Barbary Macaque, a rare monkey species which is considered to be threatened to extinction, as well as the Atlas Deer. The animals are rare species and the reserve visitors may be fortunate enough to catch sight of one or more of them.
Birdlife
Bird lovers should equally not miss visiting this eco-reserve. The plentiful birdlife has made it a prime destination for the ardent birding enthusiasts.

Established in 1987, Ahaggar National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Algeria. It stretches over an area of approximately 450,000 sq km in the Saharan Algeria Region in the extreme south of the country. It is state owned and protected.
The Ahaggar Mountains
The Ahaggar Mountains also known as the Hoggar are a highland region located in central Sahara about 1,500 km south of Algiers. It’s composed largely of rugged extinct volcanoes and summit of naked rock with complex of eroded volcanic crater plugs 155miles in diameter. The highest peak, Tahat lies at 2,919m. Regions surrounding the mountains experience sporadic rains, extreme dry conditions and variable temperatures ranging between 10º F in the evenings and 100 º F during day. Winter temperatures may go below 0°C. Despite these extreme conditions, Ahaggar region is a prime tourist destination especially the Assekrem point for the hikers.

Ahaggar National Park

Vegetation
The Ahaggar Park forms part of the West Saharan montane xeric woodlands – a remote ecoregion in southern Algeria where plants and animals endure the extreme harsh conditions of the Saharan desert. This ecoregion extends across the Tassili-n-Ajjer, Ahaggar and Air massifs in Saharan Algeria.
Wildlife

The Park protects and incredible range of wildlife such as the much threatened Saharan cheetahs, gennets, desert leopards, rare mongoose species and wild cats. Others are golden jackals, sand cats and Ruppell’s foxes.

Travel Ideas in Algeria, Getting There and around; Weather & Best time to Travel; Places in Algeria; Budget Accommodation in Algeria
Algeria, the second largest country in Africa is situated in North Africa. It is bordered by 6 countries; Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, and Niger. Algeria prides in its strong cultural identity, several sights and places of tourist interest. It is a country with so much to explore.
There are quite many reasons to explore Algeria. If you are going for the first time and have no idea where to begin and what all to see, the best way is to read all the tourism materials you get lay hands on. Browse thru the internet, get travel guidebooks or consult the several travel and tour operators in Algeria. Guideforafrica offers a few travel tips for the Algeria visitors.
Getting There
There are several flights to Algeria offered by various international airlines. Air Algérie is the national airline and flies to several destination all over the world. Air Algérie also operates has flights from Algiers domestic airport to the major cities. Travelers from neighbouring countries can get there by road with the exception of travellers from Morocco after the recent closure of the borders. By rail, there is daily operating train service connecting Algiers with Tunis in Tunisia via Constantine and Annaba.
Weather in Algeria
Algeria has a dominantly hot climate. Rainfall is heaviest and most reliable along the Mediterranean coast and in the higher parts of the Tell Atlas where it varies from 400 mm to 800 mm a year. Most rainfall comes between September and late May and November to March. It is humid at the coast. Although the climate on the coast is mild, the winters in the mountainous areas can be unbelievably relentless. The country is also very vulernarable sirocco, which is a hot dust and sand wind that can rip through the country in the summer. Winter nights in the Sahara can be chilly. In northern Algeria, climate is greatly influenced by altitude.
Best time to Visit
The best time to visit Algeria is during the month of March; and later during the spring period between October and November, when the days are cool and sunny and the winter is bearable.
What to Wear
Day time temperatures are generally warm to hot so lightweight clothing such as linens are worn for most of the year.
Accommodation
Finding a good, comfortable and affordable stay in hotels is equally important. If you are travelling to Algeria, especially the first timers, it’s recommended that you always book your hotel accommodation in Algeria well in advance. Similarly those planning for Algeria holidays, it’s plausible to make prior arrangements for your lodging and accommodation. Availability of holiday accommodation in Algeria is very hard to find even during the off seasons especially in major tourist destinations in Algeria.
When you are planning for holidays in Algeria, endeavour to find out the Hotel room status online. You can also establish your accommodation using the online Algeria Map. If you can’t get accommodation in the city itself, it should be located at a suitable distance from the main tourist attractions.
Budget Accommodation
Your wallet size is a very important thing to planning your Algeria vacation accommodation. The Hotel where you will be staying needs to fit into your budget. It is sensible that you find out the room rates beforehand by either calling up at the hotel or by simply searching online hotels in Algeria. All hotels in the country match the world class categories. Visitors are encouraged to make their reservations in advance.
Health Tips
Mosquitoes are a persistent problem in the country although they are not dangerous because malaria is not common. There is high recommendation for the use of sun protection always for visitors in the country. Travel and health insurance is highly recommended once in Algeria.
Security Tips
Algeria is highly prone to serious internal security problems especially from terrorist violence to road users particularly in the north where some terrorist groups are common. Terrorism in Algeria is focused only in certain areas in the evening. Avoid traveling at late evening. We recommend travel by air if you can instead of car and avoid off-the-main roads.
Places in Algeria

Main Cities; Algiers, Ain Sefra, Annaba, Timimoun, Bou Saada, Ghardaïa, Hassi Messaoud, Oran, Bordj Bou, Arréridj and Skikd
