Bujumbura is the largest city and capital of Burundi. It is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The city started as a small village called Usumbura. It later transformed into a military post in German East Africa in 1889 and after World War I, it was made the administrative center of the Belgian League of Nations mandate of Ruanda-Urundi. Burundi attained independence in 1962; the city’s name was changed to Bujumbura.

All international flights to Burundi touch down at Bujumbura International Airport located 11km south of the capital, Bujumbura.
