Bujumbura
is the largest city and capital of Burundi. It is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The city started as a small village called Usumbura. It later transformed into a military post in German East Africa in 1889 and after World War I, it was made the administrative center of the Belgian League of Nations mandate of Ruanda-Urundi. Burundi attained independence in 1962; the city’s name was changed to Bujumbura.
Today, Bujumbura is the country’s chief port and largest urban centre with wide boulevards and imposing public buildings connected with dusty and crowded streets. Bujumbura has a tropical savanna type of climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons. All international flights to Burundi touch down at Bujumbura International Airport located 11km south of the capital, Bujumbura. The airport is serviced by several international airlines including the Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Rwandair Express, and Brussels Airlines. Air Burundi no longer offers passenger services. A number of airport taxis to and from the city are available to lead you to your destination upon arrival.
