Bujumbura is the largest city and capital of Burundi. It is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The city started as a small village called Usumbura. It later transformed into a military post in German East Africa in 1889 and after World War I, it was made the administrative center of the Belgian League of Nations mandate of Ruanda-Urundi. Burundi attained independence in 1962; the city’s name was changed to Bujumbura.

All international flights to Burundi touch down at Bujumbura International Airport located 11km south of the capital, Bujumbura. Burundi is a tiny landlocked country of 8.5 million people located in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa. Geographically, Burundi is part of the Albertine Rift, the western extension of the Great Rift Valley. The country lies on a rolling plateau in the center of Africa. Flights from South Africa to Burundi enter the country via Bujumbura International Airport in the capital city. Several airlines offer flights from Johannesburg and have either one or two stops. Best Time to Travel
Burundi experiences an equatorial climate and hence the annual average temperature does not vary a great deal – averaging between 17C and 23C. Burundi’s February to May and September to November are its coolest months, and the most appealing time of the year. The dry season runs from June and August and December to January and you’ll be looking at parched earth some of the time.
