The popularity of flights from Europe to the Cape Verde Islands is based around the fact that it is the closest tropical island to Europe.

Cape Verde is one of Africa’s most rewarding and sought tour destinations that offer its visitors an amazing and memorable travel experience. Cape Verde, whose tourism industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the years lies in the Atlantic Sea 450km off the West African coast and forms part of the Atlantic Ocean islands region of Africa. It has extensively developed a flourishing tourist industry because of its wide range of possibilities to explore.

Earlier, Cape Verde was only an adventurer’s freak and wildlife enthusiasts who made a beeline for its amazing islands. However of late things have changed as leisure travelers also have started looking at the islands as a unique holiday destination to relax on. Lately the country’s tourism industry has gradually become one of the highest revenue earners resultant of good planning.

An interesting mix of varied geographical features, Cape Verde never fails to amaze its tourists. Though tiny in area, the islands contain a remarkable profusion of landscapes, from Maio’s barren flats to the verdant valleys of Santo Antão. Do not miss Fogo, a single volcanic peak whose slopes are streaked with rivers of frozen lava. Cape Verde also boasts some of the most romantic and unspoilt beaches in Africa. The beaches of Sal and Boa Vista are absolute splendors that increasingly attract package-tour crowds.

On any guided Cape Verde tour, a wilderness visit is a must not miss. Cape Verde has realized a great boost in its tourism industry all attributed to its rich wildlife populace. In fact, a trip to the islands is considered incomplete without indulging in a walking wildlife safari that transports you to another world where wildlife evidence surpasses words.

However it has fewer fauna than just about anywhere in Africa. Birdlife is a little richer (around 75 species), and includes a good number of endemics (38 species). The frigate bird and the extremely rare razo lark are much sought after by twitchers. The grey-headed kingfisher is more common though with its strident call.

Divers can see a good range of fish, including tropical species such as parrot fish and angelfish, groupers, barracudas, moray eels and, with luck, manta rays, sharks (including the nurse, tiger and lemon) and marine turtles. Five species of turtles visit the islands on their way across the Atlantic. Nesting takes place throughout the year, but in particular from May to October.

You do not have to have accommodation worries. Cape Verde offers a wide range of vacation accommodation for her tourists. The lodges range from jaw-dropping luxury to rustic bungalows with varying comfort, elegance and convenience. These ‘homes away from home’ are pretty suitable for families and honeymoon vacationers who may want some space to themselves as well as flexibility of their own vehicle and travel guide. With all this at your disposal, so what are you waiting for?

The Cape Verde Islands are located west of the Sahel zone and experience a typical Dry-tropical weather. This weather can vary on different islands much as temperatures in general are pretty stable throughout the year balanced somewhere in the high 20s. The islands’ location on the extreme edge of the tropical rain-belt means that the Islands do not always receive a monsoon. Some Islands even go for years without receiving any significant rain.

Rainy Season

Most times figures for annual rainfall can be quite misleading, as they are wildly different on each island. Sal, Boa Vista and Sao Vicente receive almost no rain, while some of the higher peaks on Santo Antao and Fogo can receive up to 2m a year. Cape Verde scanty rains arrive usually between August and October and it can be nasty at times with high temperatures and high humidity. If rain comes, it can be too much – almost half the year’s rain can fall in a single storm. The North-eastern slopes of these high mountains often receive several times the amount of rain. The second season usually comes between December and June, when the north-easterly Trade Winds are prevalent; and it’s only altitudes above 600m that receive regular rain during this season.

Temperatures

Temperatures can also vary between different islands and within each island at times climaxing to 40 degrees in the barren regions of the flat islands, and high 20s along the coasts. Average Daily Maximum Temperatures vary between about 24°C in January and 30°C in August/September; with the minimum going about 19°C in winter and 24°C in summer. Sea-water Temperatures vary between 21°C and 26°C from February to September; temperatures in shallow waters are normally higher.

Best Weather Months and the Harmattan

Due to their position in the Atlantic, the islands are windy most of the year and at times the northeast trade wind can be particularly strong. Best months are March to June. Best waves in April-June. Best marlin fishing is in April. The Harmattan, a dry, dusty wind blows off the Sahara Desert across the Gulf of Guinea, when there is a Tropical Low in the area. This can happen in late summer. It is sometimes called the Doctor, because of its supposedly health-enhancing qualities.

Looking for a relaxing and unique island holiday experience? Cape Verde Islands is the choice.
Little known Cape Verde has extensively developed a flourishing tourist industry because of its wide range of possibilities to explore. This former Portuguese colony and the influence of Portugal takes pride in an extended cultural mix of everyday life that you will come across on your holidays here.

Cape Verde holidays are pretty popular with windsurfers because of the trade winds that create excellent surfing conditions and for other water sport activities. The island of Sal in particular has a glowing status among the surfing fraternity that has already discovered the attractions of holiday makers in Cape Verde. One type of cuisine that you will likely encounter on Cape Verde holidays will be the tasty fish dishes that draw influence from the distinctive Portuguese and African elements of the islands.

The wonderful temperatures, tropical waters and striking beaches not to mention the amazing scenery of landscapes plus a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere wherever you go, Cape Verde is truly one versatile holiday destination. Refresh yourself on the White Sand Beaches of the Cape Verde Islands.

The countryside varies from barren interiors to stunning beaches, from rugged mountain peaks to verdant landscapes. Some islands have a lively thriving local community – with some of the best music anywhere in the world; others, equally welcoming, are predominantly developed for tourism.

An international Airport on Sal lies just close to the main tourist area of Santa Maria; an efficient ferry system linking the islands together and provides the opportunity to see even more of the amazing volcanic terrain and the unique sights of each island boosts easy access.

Cape Verde is also known for its distinctive musical style called Morna, which conveys emotion in the same way to Portuguese Fado music giving travelers the opportunity to connect with the culture of the islands in venues where it is performed.

With all this variety at hand that suits all tastes, what are you waiting for?

Cape Verde republic is an independent island lying in the Atlantic Sea some 450 km off the West African and forms part of the Atlantic Ocean islands region of Africa. A former Portuguese colony, Cape Verde is compromised of 10 islands and five islets.
The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered the islands in 1456; and subsequently turned it into a trading hub for African slaves and later an important coaling stop for transatlantic shipping. Therefore, Island’s population today has both African and Portuguese antecedents.

People & Religion

The Portuguese eventual discovery of the Islands in 1456 intensified African slavery. Slaves were brought to the islands to work on Portuguese plantations and later joined by entrepreneurs and refugees escaping religious tension in Europe hence the rich cultural and ethnic mix on the Island. The influence of African culture however, is most pronounced on the island of Santiago, the majority reside. Portuguese is the official language although Cape Verdeans also speak Crioulo – a Creole dialect based on archaic Portuguese. The republic also has a rich tradition of Crioulo literature and music.

95% of Cape Verdeans are Roman Catholic, although as with elsewhere church attendance has fallen in recent years. The evangelical Church of the Nazarene also has a following, though it is dwarfed by Catholicism in coverage.

Administration

Administratively, Cape Verde comprises of 17 divisions; Boa Vista, Brava, Maio, Mosteiros, Paul, Porto Novo, Ribeira Grande, Sal, Santa Catarina, Santa Cruz, Sao Domingos, Sao Filipe, Sao Miguel, Sao Nicolau, Sao Vicente and Tarrafal. Praia is the capital. Following freedom in 1975, and an unsure interest in unification with Guinea-Bissau, a one-party system was established and upheld until the 1990 multi-party elections. Cape Verde up to now continues to exhibit one of Africa’s most solid democratic governments.

Food crisis

Tremendous damage was done to the Islands’ delicate environment during the colonization. Poor land management coupled with over-grazing impacted permanent damage to this environment where periodic droughts are widespread. Starvation and famine have damaged the Islands several times over the previous five centuries. Since achieving independence from Portugal in 1975, Cape Verde has struggle economically also. Sparse rain and limited natural resources have also gravely induced people to emigrate to almost less than half of the entire population residing on the islands.

Wildlife

Cape Verde has fewer fauna than just about anywhere in Africa. Birdlife is a little richer (around 75 species), and includes a good number of endemics (38 species). The frigate bird and the extremely rare razo lark are much sought after by twitchers. The grey-headed kingfisher is more common though with its strident call.

Weather

Because of their positioning in the Atlantic, the islands are windy year in, year out; and where the northeast trade wind can be particularly strong. Rainfall is quite unreliable, and varies differently on each island. Sal, Boa Vista and Sao Vicente receive almost no rain, while some of the higher peaks on Antao, Fogo and Santo can receive up to 2ml a year, resulting in their lush green interiors. Temperatures also vary from island to island; and within each island – at times going up to 40 degrees in the desolate regions of the flat islands.

Cape Verde republic is an independent island lying in the Atlantic Sea some 450 km off the West African and forms part of the Atlantic Ocean islands region of Africa. A former Portuguese colony, Cape Verde is compromised of 10 islands and five islets.

People

The discovery of the Islands by the Portuguese in 1456 ensured that the enslaved Africans were brought to the islands to work on Portuguese plantations. They were joined by entrepreneurs and refugees fleeing religious persecution in Europe, leading to a rich cultural and ethnic mix. Sparse rain and few natural resources historically have induced Cape Verdeans to emigrate. It is believed that of the more than 1 million individuals of Cape Verdean ancestry, less than half actually reside on the islands. The influence of African culture however, is most pronounced on the island of Santiago, the majority reside. Portuguese is the official language although Cape Verdeans also speak Crioulo – a Creole dialect based on archaic Portuguese. The republic also has a rich tradition of Crioulo literature and music.

Weather

Cape Verde is at the very northern edge of the tropical rain belt and therefore experiences a dry-Tropical climate. It’s why the Islands are pleasant year-round. Even during the so-called rainy season usually between August and October it may not rain. The average daily maximum temperatures range from about 25ºC in January to 29ºC in August. Sea Surface Temperatures range from about 21ºC in winter to about 26ºC in the late summer. Cape Verde has the lowest temperatures of any country in West Africa. This is resultant of the cooling ocean currents and offshore winds. Winter months are marked by breezy winds, which blow in dust all the way from the Sahara. From December to March you may need a sweater in the evenings, especially at higher altitudes.
