Cairo is the capital city of Egypt and is by far the largest urban town in the Arab World. Also referred to as “The City of a Thousand Minarets” for its majority of Islamic architecture, high association with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Great Sphinx and the Pyramids in nearby Giza, Cairo has long been a center of the region’s political and cultural life.. It is the administrative capital of Egypt. Cairo is one of the densest populated cities of the world.
The Egyptian capital positioned in the heart of the largest metropolitan area in Africa, stretches out along both banks of the Nile. With an avid craving for space, the largest city on the African continent and11th largest urban town in the Arab world makes daily inroads into desert sands and farmlands. The city is home to several international media, businesses, and organizations; the Arab League has also been based in Cairo for most of its existence.
Cairo, “City of a thousand minarets”, is not considered by Muslims to be as holy a city as Mecca, Medina or Jerusalem. Its streets and alleyways do however conceal treasures of Islamic art, many of which, although crumbling, offer a dazzling sight to anyone who knows how and where to look. Admission to Islamic monuments is not free. Visitors should also be aware of the need to dress appropriately – shorts and vest tops are not acceptable – and to cover the head in all mosques
Population
With a population of 6.75 million spread over 214 sq km, plus an additional ten million residents just on the skirt the city. This is happening at such a rate that no one knows for certain whether Cairo’s population has reached ten, fifteen or perhaps even twenty million.
Like many large cities in developing countries, the city also suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, but its metro – currently the only on the African continent – also ranks among the fifteen busiest in the world, with over 700 million passenger rides annually. The city boasts of the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab World, as well as the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University.
