Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa. It shares borders with Ethiopia in the south; Djibouti in the southeast; in the east by the Red Sea; and in the north-west by Sudan.
Much as the country is quite small (118,000 sq km), it is surprisingly diverse and is virtually bisected by one of the world’s longest mountain ranges, formed by the processes that formed the Great Rift Valley, with fertile lands to the west, descending to desert in the east.
Tigre, Tigrinya and Arabic are the most extensively used languages in the country. The Muslim faith is the most dominant religion. The total estimated population of Eritrea is 5 million residents.
Eritrea’s main cities are the capital city of Asmara (also the largest) and the port town of Asseb in the southeast, as well as the seaport towns of Massawa to the east, and Keren to the north. Other towns include Akordat, Dekemhare, Nak’fa, and Teseney.
Eritrea is a charming and energetic country with lots to offer visitors, including the ancient Eritrean historical monuments, the renaissance beauty and fashion metropolis cities.
Geographically, Eritrea’s land is highly variegated. Running on a north-south axis through the middle of the country are the central highlands, a narrow strip of country some 2,000 m above sea level that represents the northern reaches of the Ethiopian Plateau. The upper layers have been highly dissected by deep gorges and river channels, forming small steep-sided, flat-topped tablelands known as ambas. The highest point in the plateau is Mount Soira, at 9,885 ft.

Rite of Passage or Violation of Rights

Female Genital Mutilation is recognized as human rights violation. It violates human rights conventions that protect women and children from cruelty and violence. Its eradication has also been included in resolutions and action plans in various international conferences, including the 1995 international conference on population and development and the 1995 Fourth World Conference on women. Although Eritrea is among the countries that support the eradication of FGM, it is still practiced on a large scale in the country.

There are three forms of FGM, according to International Family Planning Perspective, vol. 23;
•	Citoridectomy- this involves removal of all parts of the clitoris
•	Infibulation- this is the removal of part or all of the external genitalia and narrowing of the virginal opening, leaving a very small opening to allow only the follow of urine and menstrual periods.
•	Excision – pertains the removal of the clitoris together with part or all the inner vaginal lips

In Eritrea, these three forms are so pronounced. And according to the 1999 Demographic and Health survey, 90% of Eritrean women undergo one of these forms of FGM.

For the most part, the age limit for practicing it in Eritrea in seven. it is generally practiced at an early age because parents want to reduce the trauma experienced by their children and also to avoid government interference. Children are also less resistant to the practice at earlier ages.

The general perception is that women who do not undergo this practice are seen as “impure”, having constant sexual impulses driving them to prostitution, putting them outside the category or respectable people and making them unsuitable for marriage. Most parents want to make certain that their female children to not follow the” wrong path.”

Studies suggest that women who have undergone FGM are likely to want the same for their daughters. Women also lack the information and power to convince men of the harmful effects of FGM. Men fuel the practice by refusing to marry women who have not undergone FGM. And by allowing, or paying fro, their daughters operations.

There are several reasons why women practice FGM. For instance; some women believe it is a good tradition, a religious requirement, and a necessary passage of rite to womanhood, ensures cleanliness, prevents promiscuity and excessive clitoral size, and preserves virginity and many other reasons.

Eradication

The Eritrea People Liberation Front took a major step to eradicate this practice in 1988. The EPLF, which led to the fight for independence and became a government in 1991, has worked hard to eradicate this practice. During this process, the government targeted religious leaders to campaign against the harmful practices, because most of those who practice FGM believe it is a religious requirement. Christian and Muslim leaders explain that this neither is nor part of their religion. There are also anti-FGM campaigns among the youths by the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students.

In general, FGM is largely viewed as a cultural and traditional issue and therefore the government and other organizations have difficulty eradicating it. It is important to reach out to the communities in the grass root level to educate women about these horrific practices.

Eritrean Airlines is a National Airlines based in Asmara in Eritrea. It is entirely owned by the Government of Eritrea and operates services to Africa and Europe, with plans to expand its routes and network. Its main hub is Asmara International Airport.
Background
The Airline was born in 1991, but in name only, serving as the ground handling agent at Asmara International Airport and at Massawa and Assab and sales agent for other major airlines flying to Eritrea. In May 2002 it was decided to expand into airline services. Eritrean Airlines took delivery of their first aircraft, a leased Boeing 767-300ER. A second Boeing 767 was leased in mid 2004. The lease of the first Boeing 767 seems to have been replaced by an Airbus 320 in 2006 and then replaced again with a Boeing 757 in early 2007 and yet again replaced with a DC-9 in late 2007, ending up with anMD-83. The total fleet of the airline consists nonetheless of the one initially leased Boeing 767.
Eritrean Airlines started regular services between Asmara and Frankfurt, Nairobi, Rome and Milan in April 2003. In 2004, the airline included Amsterdam as another destination and in 2005; flight services extended to Djibouti and Dubai. Meanwhile, the Nairobi route was dropped. By 2006 the flights to Amsterdam had been dropped while flights to Milan remained seasonal. In late 2006, Eritrean Airlines opened business with the Government of Pakistan to commence direct flights between Eritrea and Pakistan.
Eritrean Airlines received permission from the civil aviation authority of Pakistan to start 2 flights a week each for Karachi and Lahore. However the deal did not materialize in reality. The airline announced in 2008 that it was starting seasonal services to Bamako in Mali, for hija travelers. Flights to Djibouti have been suspended since the end of 2008 due to renewed tensions along the two countries’ border and flights to Frankfurt have been temporarily cancelled as of the summer of 2009.
