Banjul City Guide

The City of Banjul is the capital of The Gambia. It is located at the opening where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean on St. Mary’s Island. Formerly Bathurst, the Gambian capital was founded in the early19th century first as a British military post with the objective to bring to an end the slave trade there. This rather small city is one quiet peaceful town with vibrant streets and markets surrounded by an eclectic mix of colonial structures, modern-day administrative blocks and areas of traditional housing offering plenty of the African charm. Banjul was named as the official capital city in 1965 when the country gained independence from the British.
The city has a population of 41,428 residents and also doubles as the country’s economic and administrative hub. The only international airport of The Gambia, Banjul International Airport (BJL) is located in the City. All international flights to Gambia touch down at Banjul airport. Banjul State House, the official residence of the president is also found here.
