Ghana is a country situated in West Africa. It is bordered by 3 countries; Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), Burkina Faso and Togo.
Getting There
Getting to Ghana is relatively quick. There are several cheap flights to Ghana with most international airlines as well as airports connecting the different regions. Mini-buses operate on longer distances. Special car hire is also available for booking.
Public Transport
Ghana is one of the very few African countries with several options for public transport and at relatively low costs. Moving around the country, the best choice is a shared taxi. Ghana travel and tour operators are more resourceful when it gets to Ghana and getting around. tours
Capital: Accra
People and Language
Ghana is a country made up of several tribes. English is the official and administrative language spoken in Ghana although Hausa and Ewe are commonly spoken throughout the country. Other major languages spoken are Fante, Ga, Twi, Dagbani and Nzema. You need some basic knowledge in some of these languages to know how to Thank, Greet, and ask for something. Ghanaians are very welcoming and this hospitality is attributed to the respect that people have for the other tribes. Making Ghana the Africa’s most hospitable travel destination.
Driving in Ghana
Driving is on the left side. Visitors without experienced of African roads are advised to organise a vehicle with a driver rather than self-drive. Driving at night has its own problems. Police barriers are more likely to worry you, and too many Ghanaians think of alcohol and driving as a great mix. Its advisable that you to only drive before sunset.
Weather in Ghana
Ghana is essentially hot and humid for most of the year. The coastal region has two rainy seasons, one peaking in May or June, and the other in October, but in the north there is a single rainy season starting in May or June. There is, however, one local peculiarity about the distribution of rainfall in Ghana. Rainfall is lower on the coast than it is a short distance inland. This is thought to be a consequence of two local features which apply to this part of the West African coastline. First, at the time when rainfall is heaviest in much of West Africa the waters offshore are unusually cool for near-equatorial latitudes; a cool current appears on the ocean surface. Second, the coast here follows a direction from west-southwest to east-northeast and is parallel with the prevailing winds. Most of the rain comes in June and May.
Best time to Travel
The best time to travel to Ghana is doubtlessly December to April after the rainy season.
What to wear
Day time temperatures are generally warm to hot, so bring lots of light clothing. Evenings are cooler, especially at high altitudes, so carry a couple of light sweaters too. Solid walking shoes and sturdy clothing are ideal for forest walks. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and a water proof jacket.
Health Safety
Visitors are recommended to take pre-arrival vaccinations and medications for preventable diseases and other diseases you might be at risk for while here. We are of the view that you see a health-care provider who specializes in Travel Medicine. If you have a medical condition, you should also share your travel plans with any doctors you are currently seeing for other medical reasons. Hepatitis A, polio, yellow fever and typhoid are prevalent in Ghana. Visitors are equally warned against the malaria risk which exists in most regions of the country. Atovaquone, doxycycline and mefloquine are the most effective anti-malarial drugs in Ghana.
Security
Currently, Ghana is very safe and stable with relatively low crime levels compared to other West African countries. However, it is advisable to take necessary travel precautions especially in regard to time of moving. Avoid late evening travel in isolated areas if you do not have a guide. Another major concern for travellers to Ghana would be the street robberies that have seemingly increased over the years. Violence is still a rarity. All in all, take some time before travel to improve your personal security.
Public Holidays

New Year’s Day,1 January

Independence Day, 6 March

Labour Day,1 May

Africa Day, 25 May

Republic Day, 1 July

Independence Day, 16 Jul

Founder’s Day, 21 September

Mother’s Day, 9 Oct

Farmers’ Day, 1st Friday in December

Christmas Day, 25 Dec & Boxing Day, 26 December

Food and Drink
There are abundant flavourful foods and drink in Ghana that offer unique tastes for the tourist’s palate. Tourist-oriented hotels and restaurants serve good both African and Western-style meals, while a wider range available in Accra and some larger towns. Local restaurants serve Ghanaian dishes, typically okra eaten with a stew. Certain foods that make up the Ghanaian diet vary according to which region of the country people live in.
Accommodation
Finding a good, comfortable and affordable stay in hotels is equally important. If you are travelling to Ghana, especially the first timers, it’s recommended that you always book your hotel accommodation in Ghana well in advance. Similarly those planning for Ghana holidays, it’s plausible to make prior arrangements for your lodging and accommodation. Availability of safari lodges in Ghana is very hard to find even during the off seasons especially in major tourist places in Ghana.
Your pocket budget is a very important thing to plan your Ghana Vacation. The Hotel where you will be staying needs to fit into your budget. It is sensible that you find out the room rates beforehand by either calling up at the hotel or by simply searching online hotels in Ghana. All hotels in the country match the world class categories. Visitors are encouraged to make their reservations in advance.

For most travelers, a Ghana trip makes a memorable retreat in one’s life span; a destination that any tourist has always dreamed to visit but with unpredictable budget constraints. One can arrange budget travel to Ghana at anytime.
However, when times are extreme in Ghana, which is a reoccurring event caused by world conflicts that seldom have much to do with Ghana; Ghana tour operators are available to journey you through this much sought destination at amazing deals. Tourists are secure in their hands during their time in the country; and for one who wishes to make a Ghana tour, not only are tours cheap, but monuments and other sightseeing locations are less crowded.
So for the individual who has always wanted to travel to Ghana but hasn’t been able to do so, keep your dreams alive in the minds. The costs associated with a Ghana budget travel include, but are not necessarily limited to, the airfare or other transport to Ghana, lodging, food, transportation to different destinations in Ghana and tickets to enter the various attractions one wishes to see, with the possible hiring of guides. Most people will also be interested in finding the least expensive destinations and means of buying a few souvenirs. Of course, this is for a fairly standard classical expedition.
Getting there & Around
Take a cheap flight to Ghana and touch Kotoka International Airport serviced by a number of international airlines. It’s recommendable that you make your flight booking well in advance to be availed with the discount fares that airlines to Ghana offer. The airlines include SN Brussels, British Airways, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania, Rwandair Express, Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airlines. Another economical way to reach Ghana would be by overland from Nigeria. You can fly to Lagos and continue to Ghana on ground.
Reputable Ghana tour operators and car rental companies based in Accra and other cities offer a wealth of local experience cheaply. Cheap Charter flights can also be arranged between domestic tourist attractions. These tour operators frequently receive deep discounts from hotels and airlines as well as provide more efficient means of transportation within the country. Even the most experienced independent traveler may not be able to beat the cost of a value tour, particularly if a full agenda of sight seeing is required.
This is particularly true when visiting Ghana from Europe. There a number of European charter services and travel houses do a large volume of business in Ghana, allowing them to negotiate huge discounts with hotels and ground operators in Ghana resulting in prices that are extremely affordable.
One of the most unusual aspects of Ghana in regards to other tourist destinations is that the local residents are warm to all visitors. They are sociable hosts, even those not fully active participants in the Ghana tourism. Most hotel human resources, if asked, will provide volumes of helpful Ghana information and detailed descriptions of their country. They will almost always be able to arrange comprehensive itineraries, and in the case of some chains, be able to guide and accommodate you from one end of Ghana to the other.
Along with a good travel guide, one who is intent on independent travel should have little trouble in doing so.
Where to Stay
You must be puzzled in deciding where to stay in Ghana. For your information, Ghana offers a range of accommodation options for the budget conscious traveler. There are several budget class hotels, apartments, guest houses as well as self-catering facilities here. The rates are very much economical. For instance Labadi Beach Hotel, Golden Tulip Accra Hotel, La-Palm Royal Beach Hotel, M Plaza Hotel, Golden Tulip Kumasi Hotel, Golden Tulip Kumasi Hotel, Crystal Rose Hotel, Fosua Hotel among several others. Ghana hotels are in serene locations perfect for tourists on vacation and are well equipped with modern facilities. Several other hotels offer accommodation on a pocket-friendly budget.
Most tourist traffic to Ghana begins in the latter half of June, and continues through the middle of September. During this period everything from flight reservations, to hotel accommodation, to full safaris is less expensive. The ultimate peak season starts before Christmas and ends after New Years, due to the holidays in European countries. During this end of year period, rates will be at their maximum, and in many cases hotel and other reservations cannot be had at any price unless planed well in advance. We advise you avoid this time for a Ghana vacation.
As we recommend in our section on Ghana tours, possibly one of the most inexpensive means of independent Ghana travel is often an amalgam, where one accepts an all-inclusive defined package tour but allows themselves extra time to do independent sightseeing or other safaris. That way, they take advantage of inexpensive tour packages while allowing themselves an adventurous time on their own.

Ghana is essentially warm and humid all year. To Ghana if you are to travel, the period December to April offers the finest time since you’ll miss the rains. But it is also the hottest time of year and quite uncomfortable in the north of the country.
July and August are good months to travel if you’re planning to stay in the south, since there’s a pause in the rains during this time and present the finest time to see the wildlife as flora is sparse. If your desire is to see Ghana festivals, August and September are the best months to visit since most local communities are celebrating their first harvests.
Accra, the Capital has a Tropical Savanna climate punctuated with wet and dry seasons. The wet season has two rainy seasons, with the heaviest rains occurring between April and July and lowers between the September and October season. This is the ideal season for bird-watching.
There is a short dry spell in August and a more pronounced dry season running through December to February accompanied by strong harmatttan winds from the Sahara Desert, which between November and February get stronger. February is the warmest month with an average temperature of about 28°C. August is the coolest with an average temperature of about 25°C, this also runs similar to other west African countries.
However it should be noted that the cooler months tend to be more humid than the warmer months. As a result, during the warmer months and particularly during the windy harmattan season, it’s a breezy dry heat and doesn’t feel as warm as the more humid but cooler rainy season.

Africa’s Most Pleasant City!
This is the Capital and most populous city of Ghana, a nation on the coast of the western region of Africa. The city also doubles as the capital of the Greater Accra Region. It is the administrative, communications, and economic center Ghana.
Over 70% of Ghana’s manufacturing capacity is located within this city. As Ghana’s capital since 1877, Accra possesses public buildings reflecting its transition from a 19th century suburb of Victoria Borg to the modern metropolis it is today. It is a great jumping-off point for visiting the whole of West Africa. There is plenty to observe in the city.
In addition to the excellent museums in Accra and Labadi Beach, there is also Jamestown – the oldest part of Accra. It has not yet been restored, so is not necessarily a tourist destination, but it will give you a glimpse into old Accra and also into what is still an active fishing harbor.
Accra is a commercial and culturally pleasant city on the southern coast. Start your sightseeing at the Perpetual Flame at the Cenotaph in Revolution Square then go on to the National Museum -one of the best collections in West Africa—allow at least two hours. Near to the museum is a good craft market which sells postcards, paintings and prints.

The city’s main sites are the central market of Makola, Liberation Square (memorial spot of the colonial times), smart tropical gardens, the Art studio (for shopping and cultural events) and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial (first Ghana president) located in downtown Accra.
Accra also boasts of gorgeous beaches, some more touristy than others. Labadi and Kokrobite are a must visit once in the city; expect a busy crowd on weekends.
You’ll probably be entertained by musicians and acrobats several of whom count on it for their livelihood. Several peddlers selling all sorts of things. CoCo beach offers you the quietest environment in Teshie though very rocky and not so good for swimming. Also Misty (in between Teshie and Tema. Ada beach is another quiet beach situated on the mouth of the Volta River. There you will find some water sports activities. The trip there will take a bit longer but it’s worth it.
For the best beaches you really need to head outside of Accra. The city is also home to the National Museum, Accra Centre for National Culture, Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra International Conference Centre, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Central Library and National Archives as well as the Residence of the President constructed in the 17th century by the Danes.
The most pleasing area of Accra is Osu. It’s located close to the Art Studio and Liberation Square. Cantonments Road- the main street plus areas around have plenty of high-quality hotels and restaurants. Fast food like burgers & pizza is widely available plus International foods like Chinese, Indian, Lebanese, and French etc. Of course not forgetting the local Ghanaian food if you’re into the club scene, there are loads of places to choose from.
Depending on the style of music, atmosphere and crowd you prefer. There is something for everyone. If you happen to be traveling with children, there is a bowling alley in Teshie, and go carts near the trade fair site in Labadi. Next to the National Assembly is the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT.
Weather
Ghana is a tropical country. Accra experiences a tropical climate because of its tropical location in the dry zone and maintains. The mean annual temperature ranges between 70 degrees F to 80 degrees F. April to June is the most pronounced rainy season although the rains usually do not prolong for a long spell.
Getting There
All international flights landing in Accra touch at Kotoka International Airport. Airline companies serving the airport include KLM, Lufthansa, Alitalia, British Airways, South-African Airways, Egypt air, Afriquiya and Apstar (former Ghana Airways.)
