Culture and Regions in Ghana
Ghana is a country in West Africa and located on the Gulf of Guinea just a few degrees north of the Equator. With a surface area of 238,500 sq km, It is surrounded by Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Côte d’Ivoire to the west.. Ghana is an extremely hospitable country, a recommended ultimate choice for first time travelers to Africa.
It has warmly welcoming citizens who are kind and amazingly friendly. The country achieved its independence for the British in 1957, to become the first Sub-Saharan African nation to do so. Geographically Ghana is divided into 5 regions, administratively into 10 regions and eventually sub divided into 138 districts each with its own District Assembly. Ghana’s highest point is Mount Afadjato (885m) found in the Akwapim-Togo Ranges. The climate is dominantly Tropical with two major seasons, the wet and dry seasons. Northern Ghana experiences its rainy season between March and November while the south experiences the season from April to Mid-November.
Tourism in Ghana is booming, as a result more tour operators are seeing increased requests for Ghana as a tour destination. Lake Volta the world’s largest artificial lake. Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana is abundantly rich in Gold and remains one of the world’s top gold producers. Ghana people also have a very rich culture and have tirelessly worked to up spring their economy to sound levels. Southern Ghana contains evergreen and semideciduos forests consisting of trees such as mahogany and ebony. It also contains much of Ghana’s oil palms and mangroves.
Ghana is a former colony of the British, uses English as the official language in the country and it dominates all government and business affairs. More than 250 languages and dialects are spoken in Ghana but English is the standard language used for educational instruction. Local languages spoken locally include Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, and many others. “Obruni”, the Akan word for foreigner literally means “white man”, is generally shouted to greet any tourist in an inoffensive way. Textiles are very important in Ghanaian culture. These cloths are used to make traditional and modern attire. Different symbols and different colors mean different things. The Kente is probably the most famous of all the Ghanaian cloths. Kente is an Ashanti ceremonial cloth hand-woven on a horizontal treadle loom.
