Travel Ideas to Guinea, Getting there and around; Weather & Best time to Travel; What to wear; Your Accommodation guide; Budget Accommodation in Guinea

Guinea is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by 6 countries; Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire).

Getting There

Getting to Guinea is relatively quick. There are several cheap flights to Guinea with most international airlines as well as airports connecting the different regions. There are direct flights from Europe with Air France and SN Brussels. Mini-buses operate on longer distances. Special car hire is also available for booking. Visitors can get there using the several road links via Danané (Côte d’Ivoire), Bamako (Mali) and Tambacounda (Senegal).

Capital: Conakry

People and Language

French is the official administrative language spoken in Guinea. However, several other local languages such as Maninka, Susu, Pular, Kissi, Kpelle, and Loma are also spoken throughout the country. It is advisable to learn certain basic terms of the languages like how to thank, Greet, and ask for something. It will help you to ease communication. It is popular in Guinea to people using their feet for sign language. This is mostly seen in more in the western region.

What to Wear

Islamic practices and beliefs are closely adhered to in the country’s customs. Visitors must be careful with how they dress up and from where.

Transport in Guinea

Domestic air services are intermittent. Most of the local people without private cars rely on shared taxis which charge per seat and other small mini buses to take them to their destinations. Few buses operate on long journeys and across the country.

Currency

The currency is the Guinean franc (GNF). Travellers are advised to desist from carrying more than 10,000 FG. It is a security risk.

Weather in Guinea

Guinea experiences heavy and prolonged rains in July and August every year subsiding in early August. These rains most times make the roads boggy and impassable. The capital, Conakry receives up to 4m of rain in July and August; the central mountainous regions receive roughly 2m of rain, and it tends to be is even between June and October. The country is relatively dry from December to February with very little rain.

Best time to Travel

The best time to visit Guinea is between November and December, after the rains but before the late December-January dusty harmattan winds, which worsen visibility. And also road travel outside the capital during the rainy season becomes tricky due to poor road network.

Health Safety

Health insurance is essential. Travel insurance which covers travellers for repatriation to their country is advisable. There are rudimentary medical, dental and optical facilities in Conakry. Medical facilities are poorly equipped and extremely limited. Prevalence of HIV/AIDS is also high in Guinea. Travellers need to take caution. Malaria is also common. Travellers should protect themselves from mosquito bites. They can use repellents or sleeping nets.

Security

It is always advisable to hand in your passport, traveller’s cheque, excess money and any other valuables at hotel reception desks for placing in their safe security. It is wise to always move with copies of your identity. Another major concern for travellers to Guinea would be the street robberies. The risk of such robberies and armed attacks increases especially after dark. In summary, Travellers should be alert all time, ensure their personal property and travel documents are secured as well as the security in their vicinity.

Public Holidays

New Year’s Day,1 January

Martyr’s Day, 3 March

Labour Day,1 May

Independence Day, 2 October

Christmas Day, 25 Dec & Boxing Day, 26 December

Food and Drink

Tourist-oriented hotels and restaurants serve good Western-style meals, while a wider range available in the capital and some larger towns. There are quite a number of restaurants spread in most towns of the country where a wide variety of alcoholic beverages are served with local Guinean dishes, typically the Jollof rice eaten with a stew. Take note that during the lunar month of Ramadan, most restaurants are closed during the day and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking.

Accommodation

Finding a good, comfortable and affordable stay in hotels is equally important. If you are travelling to Guinea, especially the first timers, it’s recommended that you always book your hotel accommodation in Guinea well in advance. Similarly those planning for Guinea holidays, it’s plausible to make prior arrangements for your lodging and accommodation. Availability of safari lodges in Guinea is very hard to find even during the off seasons especially in major tourist places in Guinea.

Your pocket budget is a very important thing to plan your Guinea Vacation. The Hotel where you will be staying needs to fit into your budget. It is sensible that you find out the room rates beforehand by either calling up at the hotel or by simply searching online hotels in Guinea. All hotels in the country match the world class categories. Visitors are encouraged to make their reservations in advance.

PLACES IN GUINEA; Mount Nimba, Soumba Waterfalls, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, Haut Niger National Park – Guinea National Parks.
Guinea may not primarily be known as a tourist destination but tourism is growing quickly in and around the country. The country attractions are limited but are fabulous enough to entertain visitors. Guide for Africa highlights the most enthralling places and tourist attractions in Guinea.
PLACES IN GUINEA
Mount Nimba
Located on the borders of Guinea, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Mount Nimba rises above the surrounding savannah. Mount Nimba is the highest point in Guinea at 1,750 meters above sea level. Its slopes are covered by dense forest at the foot of grassy mountain pastures. They harbour an especially rich flora and fauna, with endemic species such as the viviparous toad and chimpanzees that use stones as tools. One can hike up the hills into the forest, and try spotting animals and birds. This is simply a wonderful way of exploring the rugged village, and getting closer to nature. Attractions for trekkers along the routes are the giant frogs found in plenty in the Nimba mountain ranges; they are unique and look very rare from other amphibians. Also present is the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve.
