Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park offers one of the finest wildlife-viewing experiences in Kenya and Africa at large. It is located in Loitoktok District, 135 km from Nairobi city and lies immediately north-west of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania.
Amboseli National Park stretches over an area of 392 square km, and forms part of the much larger 3,000 sq km Amboseli ecosystem. It is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Masai Mara National Reserve.
Amboseli and the neighboring areas are mainly settlement areas of the Masai Warriors. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to concentration of free-ranging elephants.

Amboseli is home to over 80 different mammals including over 900 elephants, buffalos, cheetahs, lions, zebra, jackals, hyenas, wildebeests, baboons, Oryx, gerenuk, Impala, and Grant’s gazelle.
Bird life

Over 425 species of birds have been recorded in Amboseli National Park.

Where to Stay

There are several basic accommodation campsite options where a tourist pitch a tent and sleep under canvas in the wild in Amboseli including Kimbla Campsite, Amboseli Serena Lodge, Tortilis Tented Camp, Tortilis Tented Lodge, Chyulu Tented Camp, Oltukai Lodge, the Leopard Tented Camp, Nairushari Special, Kimana Lodge, Abercrombie & Kent Tented Camp, Cottar’s Tented Camp Olgulului Public Campsite, etc.
When to Visit

Most safari travelers opt to visit the in the warm, dry season running from July to October. This is when the park gets more visitors when the weather is more favorable. This is the time when you will find the park more comfortable. A rainy season, which is also very hot and humid, is from April to June. November and December are a bit cooler and have shorter rains. January through March is blisteringly warm and arid.

Entrance

Entry is by smart card only. Cards can be obtained and loaded at Meshanani gate.
Open: daily, 6:00am-7:00pm including pubic holidays.
Regulations

Note: No entry is allowed on foot. Visitors will not be allowed entry after 6:15pm.
Getting There

By Air
: The Park can be accessed by private charters touching down at Kilimanjaro Buffalo lodge airstrip.
By Road
: From Nairobi the most popular entrance is the Meshanani main gate via Namanga at Tanzania’s boarder.
• Nairobi-Namanga, take a 165 km route; drive a 65 km distance from Namanga to Meshanani gate.
• Via Tsavo-west national park; there’s a road linking Tsavo West Park to Amboseli national park accessing Amboseli through Kimana gate.
Caution!

Visitors should also be aware that Amboseli National Park is in a malarial area and proper precautions should be taken.
