MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN LESOTHO

Sehlabathebe
National Park Established in 1970, Sehlabathebe National Park is the only national designated nature reserve in Lesotho. It is situated in the south-eastern part of country and spans over an area of 6,500 hectares at an average elevation of 2,400m. Also the oldest nature reserve in Lesotho, Sehlabathebe Park boasts a scenic remote and rugged landscape of high mountain plateaus bounded by South Africa.
Imposing vast rock overhangs and several tiny lakes dominate the national park. The Park is habitat to unique and endangered species wild animals with the common sighting during Lesotho tours in the Park being the Wild Cat, Black-backed Jackal, Oribi, Eland, Otter, and some other rare species of antelopes. The versatility with extensive free lands, enable easy roaming of wildlife freely in the park. Some of the common birds are Stonechat and Cape Bunting. Characteristic, high-altitude species found in the park included Drakensberg Siskin, Mountain Pipit, Orange-breasted Rockjumper, Banded Martin and Sentinel Rock Thrush. Other attractions are the large panels of Bushmen paintings at Qomoqomong. For adventure travellers into Sehlabathebe, the best thing to do is going on a hike or a pony trek to fully enjoy the scenery.

Maletsunyane Waterfalls

The Lesotho highlands make a perfect setting for the highest single dropping waterfall of Southern Africa, Maletsunyane Falls. They are situated near the town of Semonkong on Maletsunyane River and form as the speeding water approach the canyon, the water speeding up until it reached the abrupt break in the landscape.
These majestic waterfalls create a mist as the waters come gushing down from the height of 204m beating and striking the rocks on its way down into a spectacular gorge. This continuous activity leaves a striking impression on visitors, hence its name “The Place of Smoke”. One of the most thrilling activities is climbing down the gorge to closely watch the spray and the noise from the waterfall at the bottom.

Thaba
Bosiu Mountain
Rising to a height of 1,804m above sea level, Thaba-Bosiu Mountain is a mountain range in Lesotho situated between rivers, Orange and Caledon. Thaba-Bosiu Mountain is the most significant and treasured historical site in the country stretching from one end of the country to the other. The majestic appearance of the mountain is that it’s flat-topped and lies in a valley, 15 miles east of the junction of River Phuthiatsana. Its summit is surrounded by a belt of perpendicular cliffs some 40ft. high on the average. Historically, it was at this mountain where Lesotho’s first ruler, Moshoeshoe I and his subjects in July 1824 established his base. He named the mountain, Thaba Bosiu meaning “Mountain at Night” because he and his people arrived there in the evening and the crucial defensive mission took him until late at night. Thaba-Bosiu Mountain ranges is a very popular spot for Mountain Biking Trails and climbers during Lesotho holidays.

Katse Dam

At 1,993m above sea level, Katse Dam is the highest Dam in Africa; and second largest after Lake Volta Akasombo Dam in Ghana. It is situated over the Malibamat’so River and built high on the Maluti Mountains and it’s named after a revered man who once lived at this site. The dam runs a length of 185m and is part of a large Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme. Its water first runs through a 45km / 4m diameter tunnel, exiting at a hydroelectric station near Muela. Katse Dam is most magnificent when water levels are at their highest; the surrounding scenery is picturesque and activities cater for bird watchers and water sport enthusiasts.

The Sani Pass

Sani Pass is a spectacular route within the Lesotho Mountains. It is a renowned entry point into the country from the Natal Drakensberg Park of South Africa; and connects into the western end of KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. Sani Pass is one of the celebrated birding hotspot in the country and Southern Africa. Being the only route stretching from east to west over the Drakensberg escarpment and into Lesotho, the Sani Pass offers exceptional birding spots. Almost all the endemic birds in the country are encountered along the route including the four species not found elsewhere in southern Africa, namely the Drakensberg Siskin, Drakensberg Rock-jumper, Mountain Pipit and the Bearded Vulture.

Ha Baroana Rock

Ha Baroana is one of the most treasured rock art sites located in Lesotho. It is exceptionally renowned for the early rock paintings by the Lesotho Bushmen. These fine ancient arts works lie 39km east of the capital, Maseru on an isolated hillside underneath a rock shelter facing Liphiring River.

Malealea Valley

Malealea Valley is nestled in an inaccessible region in the West of Lesotho. Despite its remoteness, the area is naturally scenic ad boasts a stunning view of the whole country. Visitors to Malealea get an opportunity to experience and encounter the original traditional Basotho way of life.
