Flying to Libya; A Comprehensive Flight Guide to Tripoli

There is plenty of competition on flights to Tripoli – both from local carriers Libyan Arab Airlines and Air Afriqiyah, and from former British Airways franchise BMED, which is now part of the BMI group. Similarly there are several connecting flights to Tripoli from North Africa and other cities in Europe. You are most likely to find connections to Benghazi and other domestic destinations from Tripoli. Direct flights to Tripoli are also available from London; with a wider range of connections being available via Paris. Direct flights to Benghazi are unfortunately no longer available from London.
Tripoli International Airport
Tripoli International Airport (TIP) is the major gateway for flights to Libya. Tripoli is the largest Mediterranean port city located in the North West of Libya and also doubles as the capital city of the country. This Mediterranean city boasts of possessing one of the largest old walled cities in North Africa as well as some superior Italian and Turkish colonial buildings. Tripoli International is a renowned hub for Libyan Airlines. Many of them ply the country with one or two connections. Egypt Air via Cairo, Emirates via Dubai, British Airways via London and South African Airways via Cairo are some of the one stop flights to Libya from Johannesburg. Most international flights arrive in and through Tripoli Airport. Tripoli is operated by the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Bureau of Libya and is the nation’s leading airport located in Ben Ghashir town 34km south of the city centre. There is only one main Passenger Terminal in Tripoli International Airport which serves international departures and arrivals plus a small domestic terminal for National flights-which handles the Check in and arrival facilities for domestic flights. Most flights leave Tripoli International Airport from the main International Passenger Terminal, while domestic flights leave through the National Terminal.
The Airport also doubles as the heart for Buraq Air and Afriqiyah Airways. The International Terminal hall is a 5 storied structure with a surface area of 33,000 sq m and with a capacity of 3 million passengers a year. Statistics show that the Airport handled 2.1 million passengers in 2007.
The Climate. Libya’s climate is mostly dry and desert like in nature. However, the northern regions enjoy a milder Mediterranean climate. The climate in the north, along the Mediterranean Sea is a little cooler and hence this is where the majority of the population lives as you would expect. The summers are usually hot and dry, whilst winters are mild to cool with rainfall. Therefore the best time of the year to visit the country will be dependent on the activities you have in mind.
