Safari information to Kasungu National Park, Kasungu Safaris, Accommodation available, Facilities, Wildlife and Bird varieties in Kasungu National Park; Miombo woodland
Established in 1970, Kasungu National Park is the second largest in Malawi. It is located west of Kasungu, about 170 km north of Lilongwe on the western border with Zambia. Spread more than 2,316 square kilometres in a horse shoe shape, the park presents rich and diverse vegetation dominated by the Miombo woodland sheltering amazing wildlife.
First declared a forest reserve in1922, and later gazetted as a game reserve in 1930, Kasungu Park was at one time known for its significant population of elephants (numbering to over 2,000 in 1970), but it is now estimated as 150 head. There has seen a hasty deterioration in the wildlife here attributed to poaching.
Some of the wildlife which was once resident in the park includes Cheetah, Black Rhinoceros, giraffe and side striped jackal.
Despite these threats, the park still remains a prime spot for wildlife expedition, wildlife tourism, nature safari, and adventure tourism for Malawi safaris.
VEGETATION
The vegetation consists mainly of Miombo Woodland with grassy river channels, known locally as Dambos.
Miombo woodland interspersed with sandy plains and a number of rivers meandering through the park particularly the tributaries of Rivers Lingadzi and Dwanga which also are vital reproduction and resident spots for hippos in the whole Park.
TOPOGRAPHY
Kasungu National Park has a rolling landscape of approximately 1,000m above sea level with isolated inselbergs (Wango’mbe Rume) rising up to 1,330m. These hilly regions areas are the grassy dambo areas that offer good grazing for most wildlife.

Kasungu Hippo

Kasungu Bird

WILDLIFE
The Kasungu Park, one of the best wildlife safari destinations of Malawi, is widely acclaimed for a significant population of elephants. There are about 150 elephants in the park. Other commonly seen animals resident in the jungles of Kasungu include buck such as Eland, Sable, Roan, Hippos, Hyenas, Kudus, Zebras, Buffaloes, Impalas and Hartebeests. The predator animals especially Leopards and Lions are rarely seen. The elusive Painted Dog is sighted but very rare. Watching these wild animals roaming within the jungles of the Park on game drives is a unique exciting and cheerful experience. Also a buffer zone stretching about 5km is designated on the park’s eastern border.
BIRD LIFE
There are numerous species of eye-catching sunbirds found in the Brachystegia woodlands. The miombo woodlands are great habitats for a wide variety of birds in Kasungu. And the major birds that are found are Curved bills, Solitary Souza’s shrikes, Whyte’s barbets, the blue-head weaver, Stierling’s woodpecker, etc. the green headed and Oustalet’s sunbirds are also common species.
Bird watching in Kasungu National Park is best during the summer months from June to September when significant numbers migrate to the park.

GETTING THERE
Getting to park is principally by road. It is 2hrs drive from Lilongwe city, branching off to Kasungu-Boma Route.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Most years the park is closed during March, during the wet season. The park is warm from the months of September to May and cooler from June to August.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
- Stone and Iron Age sites
– Ancient Rock Paintings
SAFARI ACTIVITIES
Game Drives – This is the most preferred way to enjoy the jungle beauty and wildlife attractions of Kasungu. Exploring the jungle in open jeep is a cheerful for the safari visitors in the park. Enjoy watching the hippos around Lingadzi and Dwanga Rivers.
Bird Watching - This is best during the summer months from June to September when significant numbers migrate to the park. Binoculars and sun protectors are highly essential for best birding. The best spot in Kasungu National Park for birding particularly for the brightly coloured sunbirds are the Brachystegia woodlands.

Established as a national park in 1965, Nyika National Park is Malawi’s oldest and largest park. It spreads over a total area of 3000 sq km stretching across the great Nyika plateau in northern Malawi overlapping the border with Zambia. It boasts impressive scenery and is well known for incredible diversity of wildlife including more than 200 orchid species.
Nyika National Park is nestled on a picturesque 2000m plateau with an awe-inspiring sight of Lake Malawi. The Park is characterized by scenic mountain landscapes and endless grasslands. Four rivers originate on the plateau and flow down into the surrounding forests and lower areas creating beautiful waterfalls.

Nyika National Park

The Nyika Plateau
The Nyika Plateau lies in northern Malawi, with a small portion in north eastern Zambia. Most of it lies at elevations of 2100 to 2200 m above sea level. Nyika means wilderness and this wild vast area has probably remained the same for many centuries. It boasts breathtaking landscapes with lower slopes covered in woodland, a high plateau of rolling grasslands and forested hills. The whole plateau is protected by the National Park. Nyika Plateau offers amazing game viewing.
Vegetation
Nyika National Park has a generally wet tropical rain forests and alpine vegetation, which make a good habitat for the several species of animals and birds. The rolling hills are dominated by montane vegetation, and the valleys are mostly covered in miombo woodland. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The grasslands of Nyika are rich in wildflowers. The montane flora is the reason for the large numbers of antelopes especially the eland and roan.
Climate
Areas of raised altitude of Nyika Park experience cold climate for most part of the year, which is suited to most of the species of wild animals habituating here.

.

Wildlife
Leopards, roan antelope, eland and reedbuck are in good numbers in the park. It is also home to the highest densities of leopards in Central. There are a number of other species of smaller mammals including warthog and bushpig. Elephants and buffalo usually keep to the lower ground on the northern edge of the park but lions and elephants have recently been seen on the high plateau. Other common animals here include zebras, bushbucks, klipspringers, jackals and possibly hyenas. Duiker, bushbuck and the comic warthog particularly are often seen, and the less common red forest duikers are easily spotted in the forest patches. During the rainy months, from November to May, they can be found grazing on the open grasslands of the high plateau, unconcerned and undisturbed. Later in the year they descend to the woodlands for protection from the cold. Zebra can be seen in vast numbers, alert and ever curious of visitors.
Also of visitor interest are the three butterfly species and one species each of chameleon, frog and toad which are uncommon to other places.
Bird life
For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer. Over 400 species have been recorded that include, among others, the rare Denham’s bustard, the wattle crane, red-winged francolin, etc. Most forest birds are not easy to spot in the Park for instance the bar tailed trogon. However birdlife is rich particularly during November and December when migrants are present.
Other attractions
— Some ancient rock paintings have been found at Fingira Cave in the southern part of the plateau with the area sparsely settled.
— The Jalawe rock; this spot has a spectacular viewpoint of the plateau. The rock consists of a single piece of granite that emerges from the plateau with an incredible sheer drop of hundreds of meters on its sides.
— Juniper Forest Reserve; this forest reserve has been proclaimed to protect the Juniperus procera.
Best Time to Visit
November to May is the best time for wildlife safaris; October to December is the prime season to enjoy the prolific bird life in the Park, it is also when migration brings more brilliant species to sojourn here; whereas January and February are the best months to visit to experience the spectacular flowering of indigenous orchids.
Getting There
The quickest way to reach Chelinda Camp is on a flight by Nyika Air Services. Flights for up to five people can be chartered from Lilongwe. There are no public buses into the park; the nearest you can get is the service from Mzuzu to Rhumpi. From there, you can get a minibus to Chelinda Camp. If coming by car, the main Thazima gate is in the southwest of the park, 54km from Rumphi; to Chelinda Camp it’s another 55km. Fuel is available at Chelinda, but in limited supply so it’s best to fill up before you enter the park.
There is also a daily bus which operates only during the dry season to and fro between Mzuzu and Chitipa, going through the park, via Thazima and Kaperekezi gates. 4WD is highly recommended for the less accessible sections of Nyika. A 2WD is appropriate for most roads in the park in the dry season.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is available at The Stone House-built by the missionaries early this century; a couple of campsites are located on the escarpment road, including Falls Grocery, opposite the path to Manchewe Falls; Chelinda Camp and Chelinda Lodge; there is possibility of camping at Kazuni Safari Camp.
Activities
— Nyika Plateau Hiking; Nyika is wonderful for trekking. Conventional 4×4 excursions are organised on a daily basis. The best time to hike is between September and April when the grasses are covered with colour as the wild flowers in the region are at their most brilliant. Views at this time are usually at their most breathtaking stage.
— Night Game Drives; night driving in Nyika Park at night-this can sometimes be a good time to see leopards. Leopards skilled at camouflage can only be spotted by an alert eye. You can drive round the Parks roads in company of a park guide.
— Horse Safaris; the horse riding safaris have been return recently. There are horses suitable for beginners and skilled. Most of these safaris start from Chelinda Lodge.
— Game Walking Safaris; this is more popular in Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve.
— Fly-fishing; Fly fishing excursions are popular in the dams near Chelinda and close by streams.
— Forest walks; Walking in Nyika is safe and safari visitors are able to come closer to the wild.
— Mountain biking
— Bird Watching

Where to go in Malawi for holiday, Destinations & places to visit and Adventure destinations – Guide for Africa; Top destinations to visit in Malawi, Lake Malawi, Zomba Plateau, Nyika National Park, Shire River
Lake Malawi
Lake Malawi located in Malawi is the third largest and one of African Great Lakes. The lake is also shared by Mozambique and Tanzania. It’s the second deepest lake in Africa and it’s a habitat for more aquatic life like fishes than any other water body on the earth. It draws its water from the Great Rift Valley just like other African water bodies. One of the world’s biological wonders, Lake Malawi forms an inland sea with a rich marine life bounded by lively villages and palm-fringed beaches. Sailing, waterskiing, scuba diving and game fishing for Tiger Fish and Lake Salmon are some of the best holiday activities on the lake; The Lake protects a unique diversity of more than 400 species of tropical fish in Lake Malawi Marine Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). It is also great habitat for water birds.
Kasungu National Park
Declared in 1970, Kasungu National Park is the second largest and one of the best wildlife destinations in Malawi. It is located the Central Region approximately 170 km north of Lilongwe, stretching along the Zambian border. The Park is dominantly occupied by Miombo woodland with grassy river channels, known locally as Dambos. Several smaller rivers flow through the park, more commonly the Dwanga River and the Lingadzi and its tributary, the Lifupa. Lifupa River has some of the greatest concentrations of hippos in Malawi. The Park is also protects huge numbers of elephants although threatened by poachers because of ivory. Other animals native to the park include buck such as sable, roan, kudu, impala and hartebeest and zebra and buffalo. Predators in Kasungu National Park include hyena, wild dog and serval. Kasungu is also a birding haven. Several migrant birds are seen especially between June and early September. Accommodation is available at Lifupa Lodge.
Zomba Plateau
Zomba Plateau is unique great slab of a mountain rising up to1, 800m. It has vast tracts of cedar, pine and cypress but elsewhere the vegetation is wild and mixed. The plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and there are tumbling waterfalls and still lakes. There are driveable tracks right round the top from which are views of such splendour that they were described in colonial times as “the best in the British Empire”. Whether walking or driving, there is always something to see. Wildlife present includes leopards and Baboons. Elephants are however not so common for sighting. There are also giant butterflies particularly on the lower slopes. Birdlife is also in plenty. Rare species of tourist interest found here include the long-crested eagle and augur buzzard.
Nyika National Park
Established in 1965, Nyika National Park is the oldest and the largest in Malawi. It stretches over an area of 3000 sq km. Nyika Plateau is the major feature of the park. In the park are vast range of high rolling hills, sweeping wide valleys, dense pine forest and flower-studded grasslands. The park is a great trekking spot in the country. Aside from the scenic landscape in the Park, Nyika National Park hosts several wild animals including zebras, bushbucks, reedbucks and roan antelopes, warthogs, klipspringers, jackals and possibly hyenas and leopards. Some of the most enthralling safari activities in the Park are camping at Chelinda Camp, nature walks, horse riding and hiking. Nyika National Park is a top spot for spotting rare African wilderness
Liwonde National Park
Liwonde is perhaps the most popular of all the game parks in Malawi. Nestled about 160 km north of Blantyre, Liwonde National Park is a relatively small park covering 580 sq km. It offers perfect game viewing especially along the River Shire which flows along its western border. Some of the best holiday activities are boat safaris. You can also take on game drives 4x4s as well as nature walks. Wildlife present in the Park includes elephants, leopards and hyena. Lions are occasional. Antelopes include kudu, sable and bushbuck. Available also are several hippos and crocodiles particularly on river Shire. Black rhino has been re-introduced. Birdlife is exceptionally especially along the Shire River. Some of the most common birds here are the fish eagles, weaver birds and the Pel’s fishing owl often seen at dusk along the river’s edge.
Lichenya plateau
The Lichenya plateau is a wonderland of green fields and deep impenetrable cedar forests. It is the only place on the 100-square-mile plateau where the trees remain in a relatively untouched state. Rocky outcrops line the edges of the valley where the shaggy trees grow in waves of unadulterated green. It is here that the bauxite ore rests and is where Gondo Resources want to dig a massive open pit mine.
Mount Mulanje
At 9,855 ft, Mount Mulanje has Africa’s highest vertical cliff. The mountain rises sharply from the rolling plain of the highlands, bounded by near-vertical cliffs of bare rock, many over 1000m high. It is often misty here and Mulanje’s high peaks sometimes jut above the cloud, giving rise to the local name ‘Island in the Sky’. Several Malawi tourists are common at the base of the mountain. The stunning scenery of the mountain is a great magnet for adventure tourists especially the trekkers. Clear and accessible paths and well-maintained huts have been constructed on Mt. Mulanje to offer fine hiking. However, one of the biggest dangers here is the notoriously unpredictable weather. Even during the dry season, there are sudden rains, blowing cold winds and thick mists. Hiking is most times challenging.
Shire River
The Shire is a river shared by Malawi and Mozambique. It is the outlet of Lake Malawi and flows into the Zambezi. It stretches over 1200 km in length. It is most important river in Malawi. The Shire joins the main river at a point where the Zambezi is of great width. The upper Shire River connects Lake Malawi with Lake Malombe.
Lilongwe
Nicknamed the ‘Garden City’ for its colourful flowering trees and wooded slopes of indigenous trees, Lilongwe is the largest city and capital of Malawi. It is an enthralling tourist destination boastful of amazing attractions. The city is a perfect place for Malawi holidays and adventure travel. Beach holiday travellers in Malawi are commonly seen on the beaches of Lake Malawi. With Lilongwe flights to this naturally adoring city, Malawi tourists are left with nothing to regret about.

Travel tips to Malawi, Getting there and around; Weather & Best time to Travel; What to wear; Your Accommodation guide; Budget Accommodation in Malawi
Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. It is bordered by 3 countries; Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Dubbed ‘the warm heart of Africa,’ Malawi offers something for all visitors. One of the most beautiful and laid-back countries in Africa, Malawi is renowned for being a destination for those seeking adventure, leisure or eco-tourism attractions. There are many reasons to visit it. If you are going for the first time and have no idea where to begin and what all to see, the best way is to read all the tourism and travel materials you get lay hands on. Browse thru the internet, get travel guidebooks or consult the several travel and tour operators in Malawi. You can also establish more travel information on Namibia using the online Malawi Map.
Getting There and Around
Getting to Malawi is relatively quick. There are several cheap flights to Malawi with most international airlines as well as airports connecting the different regions. Mini-buses operate on longer distances. Special car hire is also available for booking.
Capital: Lilongwe
Weather & Best time to Travel
Malawi has a sub-tropical climate, which is relatively dry and seasonal. The warm-wet season starts in November up to April in the year. June and July are the coldest months with a very comfortable average daytime temperatures 21ºC. Rainfall is more prevalent on the higher plateaus. The warm, humid rainy season, from November to April, brings hotter temperatures of around the mid-30 ºC range. Winter, the dry season, is the best time to visit, and lasts from May to October. It offers excellent game viewing and hiking opportunities in the country. However, there are high winds and some dust storms during this period. Travellers are warned.
Health Safety
Visitors are recommended to take pre-arrival precautions against malaria (risk exists throughout the year in the whole country), Hepatitis A, polio, yellow fever and typhoid. Other health concerns are meningitis (depending on time of year and area visited); insect-borne diseases; cholera (officially considered infected); bilharzia in some stretches of Lake Malawi. It is advisable that you don’t swim in still water pools or ponds in rivers below the plateaux or on the shores of the lake. Prevalence of HIV/AIDS is also high in Malawi. Travellers need to take caution.
Security Warning
Another major concern for travellers to Malawi would be the street robberies that have seemingly increased over the years. Violence is still a rarity.
Public Holidays

New Year’s Day,1 January

John Chilibwe Day, 15 January

Martyr’s Day, 3 March

Labour Day,1 May

Freedom Day, 14 June

Independence Day, 16 Jul

Mother’s Day, 9 Oct

Christmas Day, 25 Dec & Boxing Day, 26 December

Accommodation
Finding a good, comfortable and affordable stay in hotels is equally important. If you are travelling to Malawi, especially the first timers, it’s recommended that you always book your hotel accommodation in Malawi well in advance. Similarly those planning for Malawi holidays, it’s plausible to make prior arrangements for your lodging and accommodation. Availability of safari lodges in Malawi is very hard to find even during the off seasons especially in major tourist places in Malawi.
Your pocket budget is a very important thing to plan your Malawi safari trip. The Hotel where you will be staying needs to fit into your budget. It is sensible that you find out the room rates beforehand by either calling up at the hotel or by simply searching online hotels in Malawi. All hotels in the country match the world class categories. Visitors are encouraged to make their reservations in advance.

Lake Malawi is one of Africa natural splendours. It is the continent’s third largest freshwater and second deepest lake (700 m below sea level) after Lake Tanganyika. (It’s the eighth largest lake in the world). The lake is shared by three countries namely Malawi (Shares the largest portion), Mozambique and Tanzania.
It is one of the greatest habitats for aquatic life such as rare fish species than any other water body on the earth. The lake also has its basis from the Great Rift Valley where most African water bodies in Africa draw their source.
Lake Malawi occupies a total surface area of around 29,600 sq km; (680km long and 75 wide) and the biggest and most prominent water supply to the lake is River Ruhuhu. The lake out let is at river Shite, a tributary to Grand River Zambezi in Zimbabwe.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi cichlids

Cichlids are the best secrets of Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi cichlids are some of the most beautiful fish in the world and are fun to watch. The two most common cichlids to be found in the lake are the tilapiines and haplochromines. Like most cichlids, Lake Malawi cichlids are known for being territorial and aggressive towards each other. Their striking crest and markings are particularly attractive. The peacock cichlids are the most colourful. More common peacock cichlids are the Melanochromis auratus and the Labeotrophus trewavasae. While in many species of cichlids only the male has the vivid markings, in these two species both sexes have colourful markings. Most are adapted for feeding off algae attached to substrate. Ideally Malawi Cichlids should have their own aquarium and as usual the larger the better. But the Cichlids remain the most popular types of fish to keep in a tropical freshwater body.
Wildlife

Malawi Hippos

Lake Malawi supports a large range of wildlife including crocodiles, hippopotamus, monkeys, and a significant population of African fish eagles that feed off fish from the lake. On Malawi Safaris to Lake Malawi National Park, tourists have clear cut chances of spotting this variety. The lake also supports populations of snails. There are a number of fish species in the lake that specialise in preying on snails.
Activities

Snorkelling

Kayaking

Water skiing

Scuba diving

Sailing

Cruises on Shire River (Though not so common)

Despite the activities, settlement around Lake Malawi sparse; there are evidently long stretches of entirely not in use golden sand lakeshore, lapped by crystal clear waters.

Explore Malawi and experience this unique tour destination with highlights such as Lake Malawi, amazing landscapes, wildlife and extraordinary birdlife on Malawi safari tours.

Malawi is a spiced destination for travelers who love nature. It is situated in southeastern Africa and shares international boundaries with Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. The country may be one of the most laid-back countries in Africa, but it has enough particularly for the eco-tourists and nature holiday makers. Malawi safari itineraries are fantastic packages. The national parks, mountain hiking, game reserves, boat safaris, horseback safaris and plateau trekking will be highly appreciated by those who love to be in the midst of nature. Guide for Africa is your one stop source for destination and tourist information about Malawi. We have highlighted for adventurous travelers the most captivating Malawi Safari options. However, we recommend an open 4WD vehicle for your wildlife safaris.

Lake Malawi Tours

Lake Malawi the third largest lake in Africa is Malawi’s most prominent tourist attraction. This magnificent lake occupies most of the country’s eastern border and stretches nearly 600km from north to south and up to 100km in width. It is the world’s first freshwater national park and a World Heritage Site. The thousands of freshwater fish species, the mbuna, are more abundant and varied here than anywhere else in the world. Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand. Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax, and, of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops.

Malawi Wildlife Safaris

One of the best memorable experiences in Malawi is the wildlife safaris. As a safari destination, Malawi boasts plenty of game in beautiful characteristic surroundings. Malawi’s nine national parks and wildlife reserves cover a great variety of landscape and vegetation types, and include areas of genuine unspoilt wilderness. Game rich Nyika Plateau, Vwaza Wildlife Reserve; Kasungu National Park, Nkhotakota Reserve, Liwonde National Park, Lengwe National Park and Mwabvi Game Reserve are some of the best wildlife safari destinations in Malawi. Tourists have clear cut chances to spot the African big five (lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino) as well as an impressive array of antelope plus smaller cats including serval and caracel. Hippos are also found in huge numbers symbolic of Malawi’s rich wildlife.

Birding safaris

Malawi is truly an ornithologist’s paradise. No other area in Southern Africa can match the amazing diversity of habitats and richness reflected in the ever-burgeoning bird list of over 650 bird species coupled with the relative ease of bird watching. Best known is the fish eagle around Lake Malawi and along river Shire. It is difficult to find many countries that can approach Malawi as a destination for bird watching. Few indeed will get close to the range of species that can be seen and even fewer have such ease of viewing. Most of the birding safaris to Malawi are tailor made. Please contact you tour operator for who will take into account of such factor as access and their productivity.

Cultural Tours

Malawi’s people are its greatest plus – warm, friendly, convivial, colourful and effervescent. It is impossible to visit and not to become engaged with the people, but there are now opportunities to spend time locally for a first-hand experience of the cultures, way of life and ceremonies. Several cultural sites and museums are around the country including Mangochi Lake Museum, Livingstonia mission museum and a postal services museum near Zomba. The Cultural & Karonga Museum Centre is well worth a tour. There’s also plenty to discover of Malawi’s past, beginning with the pre-history remains of the Karonga district and the Dedza Stone Age rock paintings.

Excursion Trips & Lake Malawi Cruises

Lake Malawi provides for almost any water sport you may desire. Its size, warm freshwater and picturesque beauty surrounding of the beaches make it a haven for those seeking an all-year round location to swim, scuba dive, and snorkel, water-ski, sail, kayak, parasail or simply potter about in boats. The salt-free water is another plus. The clear, calm, warm, shark-free, tideless and salt-free waters make Lake Malawi an excellent place to dive. It is widely recognised as one of the best freshwater diving in the world. It’s possible to dive at Kaya Mawa and Mango Drift on Likoma Island and Danforth Yachting and Mumbo & Domwe Island camps at the Lake Malawi National Park (Cape Maclear).

Sailing and Canoe Expeditions

Sailing ranges from an hour to a full day kayaking expedition. Sailing tours are increasingly becoming popular in Malawi, particularly in the Lake Malawi National Park. Sea-going kayaks are used to paddle to eco-camps on two deserted islands in the park (Mumbo and Domwe). The highlight of the sailing calendar is the Lake Malawi Yachting Marathon every July. Canoe expeditions are also on offer at Nkwichi Lodge in the Manda Wilderness Community Reserve. The tide- and current-free waters make for good sailing and small boats are available at most lakeshore lodges.

Boat Safaris

Other options include boat safaris along the Shire River. For a privately guided pleasure trip of up to a few hours there are several places along the shore and on small islands just offshore. Traditional wooden boats or modern fiberglass speed boats are available. Some trips are more captivating to include fishing along the way. If only one pleasure trip is to be taken, it should be out on a boat on Lake Malawi. Boat excursions are also offered along the upper part of the River Shire, particularly through Liwonde National Park.

Malawi’s rich biodiversity is so evident in its national parks and game reserves. This diversity of Malawi wildlife lures several wildlife tourists from all over the world. The country has 9 National Parks and Reserves all of which possess a wide variety of captivating diversity of terrain, rare species of flora, fauna and aqua fauna. Much as it may not have quite the sheer concentration of predator animals as some of its better known neighbours, it is an equally amazing adventure destination. It boasts an incredible variety of birds with over 650 recorded species spread across the different landscapes. Below are Malawi’s National Parks and Game Reserves listed according to region.

SOUTHERN MALAWI

Liwonde Hippos

Liwonde National Park – Although only 580 sq km of size, Liwonde is perhaps the most popular of all the game parks in Malawi. It is lies 160 km north of Blantyre. It is a top spot for game viewing especially because of the river Shire which flows along its western border, allowing boat safaris and guided game drives in 4×4 vehicles. Wildlife includes huge concentration of elephants, antelopes such as kudu, sable and bushbuck; recently re-introduced Black rhino, leopards and hyena and lions are occasional, numerous hippos and crocodiles more popular around the river. Birdlife is exceptional. The river attracts several bird species such as fish eagles, weaver birds and Pel’s fishing owl often spotted at dusk along the river’s edge. More…………………..

Lengwe Safaris

Lengwe National Park – This Park is 900 sq km in size. It stretches south of Majete and 80km from Blantyre. Lengwe is relatively barren outside the rainy season and many of the water courses become dry sandy channels. Game viewing is so pronounced during the dry spells as the animals come to quench at the small permanent water pools. There are hides and man-made pools in the eastern area of the park just a short distance from the main gate. Wildlife includes leopards, Baboon, monkey, warthog and buffalo and hyenas. Antelopes are more common. On Game drives you can’t see the beautiful nyala. Also the popular duiker, bushbuck and impala roam the park. The birdlife is spectacular with more than 300 rare bird species recorded. More…………………..

Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve

Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve – Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve is located at the southernmost tip of Malawi. It is the smallest of the Malawian reserves with a size of 135 sq km. It is also the most remote. Nevertheless it boasts a variety of habitats unequalled by the larger reserves, and, because of its remoteness. Mwabvi was once regarded as an ‘empty’ reserve devoid of game. But ever since access routes were opened up, it is now a great destination for sightings of magnificent sable and kudu, impala, buffalo and other antelopes. Birdlife is equally amazing.

The reserve is beautiful most times of the year and though travel through the park is only possible with a 4×4 with the guide of armed guards. More……………….

CENTRAL MALAWI

Nkhotakota Reserve

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve – This is one of the two large game reserve areas in Central Malawi. It stretches to over1, 800 sq km of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers into Lake Malawi. Nkhotakota reserve is dominated by the miombo woodland with large pockets of giant bushes and a few patches of rainforest. The reserve is difficult to access because of the limited access routes. Much as the habitation conditions are harsh for wildlife, it’s a superb example of true African wilderness. It is a great destination for the adventurous travelers who wish to explore a walking safari. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers and palm nut vultures among the 130 recorded species. More……………………

Kasungu National Park

Kasungu National Park – The national park lies in the west of the Central Region bordering Zambia. It covers an area of 2,100 sq km of natural woodland and bush with sporadic stretches of more open grass. Wildlife includes antelopes, elephants, zebra plus small herds of buffalo. Also available are predators including leopards, hyenas, servals and jackals. There are a significant number of hippos in the lake at Lifupa. It is also a perfect birding destination.

Access is relatively easy compared to other reserves. More………….

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi National Park – This is the world’s third largest freshwater national park and a World Heritage Site. It lies at the southern end of Lake Malawi and it’s the only national park in Malawi that was created to protect fish and aquatic habitats. The park includes a land area around the cape and bay as well as the Lake and islands up to 100m off shore. It is home to several animals such as baboons, antelope and hyrax, and, of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops. There are thousands of freshwater fish species in the lake. More…………………..

NORTHERN MALAWI

Nyika National Park

Nyika National Park – this is one of Malawi’s jewels and offers unique wildlife viewing on its rolling grassland plateau. It covers an area of 3200 sq km, (Malawi’s largest park). It extends across the great plateau which is essentially a granitic dome. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The Nyika National Park is home to large herds of zebra, eland, roan antelope, sable antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, kudu reedbuck, bushbuck, duiker, and warthog. It houses the largest concentration of leopard in the country. For the birdwatcher, over 400 species have been recorded. There is such a lot to see in the vast park: waterfalls, a Neolithic rock shelter, trout pools and even a ‘magic lake’ are just some of the attractions. More……………….

Vwasa Safari Buffalos

Vwasa Marsh Wildlife Reserve – this is a lowland area offering a spectacular bush-game area of marsh and plain, with a few rocky outcrops. It is covers 1000 sq km and lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu. The reserve is renowned for its scenic thick forests and grassland, thin woodland and marsh. Herds of thirty or forty elephants are regularly to be seen and there are large numbers of hippos. Lake Kazuni, near the main entrance to the reserve is famous for its hippos. Buffalo are present in the reserve but their roaming habits make their sightings less easy to predict. As on Nyika, there are plenty of smaller mammals. It is this rich habitat which attracts a splendid range of birdlife. Over 310 bird species have been recorded here including the white-faced tree duck, heron and stork. More……………………

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi. It is located in the Central Region, 300km north of Blantyre along the Lilongwe River at an altitude of about 1000m. Lilongwe’s strategic location on the main north-south highway through to Northern Zambia has accelerated the city’s fast growth into becoming the second largest city in Malawi.

Lilongwe City Street

Back to roots, Lilongwe started as a small village on the banks of the river Lilongwe; it later became a British colonial administrative centre in the 20th century. The city is renowned for its ancient artistic architecture.
Recently, the country’s parliament has been shifted to Lilongwe and handles all the legislative matters of Malawi. It is a perfect blend of a conventional city with a contemporary one. The city resumed a political status of Malawi whereas Blantyre remained the economic capital. The city has a population of 902,388 dwellers.
Lilongwe is a multi-functional city performing several functions. It hosts the top Government administrative headquarters, International Aid Agencies, Diplomatic Missions and the Reserve Bank Headquarters. The city boasts a lively nightlife with a casino within the city centre that offers entertainment to the city dwellers. There are also many coffee shops, cafes; bars, clubs and restaurants.
City Attractions
Although this city is not much appealing to the tourists, it has equally become an attractive destination for the shopaholic travelers. Some of the prominent attractions in Lilongwe include a Nature Sanctuary along Kenyatta Rd, Lilongwe Golf Club with high-quality sporting facilities, a popular market on Malangalanga Road, renowned for holding cloth arcades and the old Indian spice.
Lilongwe Accommodation Options

Sunbird Capital Hotel

There are a number of first-class hotels and other accommodation options available in Lilongwe with the Sunbird Capital hotel and Sunbird Lilongwe hotel being the best known. Others include Kiboko Town Hotel, Korea Garden Lodge, Heuglin’s Lodge, Burley House, Africa House Malawi, Madidi Lodge, Kumbali Country Lodge, Sanctuary Lodge, Backpackers, Mabuya Camp, and Mufasa Lodge.
Weather and When to Travel
Lilongwe city experiences a humid subtropical climate with pleasantly warm summers and mild winters. Lilongwe features a short wet season between December and March and later a prolonged dry spell coming in the later part of the year. However, the city experiences heavy downpours during the rainy season, seeing around 200mm of rain in a month during the wettest months. During the rainy season, between November and April, Lilongwe is muddy, humid, and hot. June and July are relatively cool and windy months. Much as the city is located in the tropics, its temperatures are generally low, a condition attributed to its altitude. During the other months of the year, Lilongwe is dry and dusty. June and July are cooler than the rest of the year and this presents the best time to travel to Lilongwe and Malawi holidays.
