lake-malawi-park1Lake Malawi the third largest lake in Africa is Malawi’s most prominent tourist attraction. This magnificent lake occupies most of the country’s eastern border and stretches nearly 600km from north to south and up to 100km in width. It is the world’s first freshwater national park and a World Heritage Site. The thousands of freshwater fish species, the mbuna, are more abundant and varied here than anywhere else in the world. Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand. Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax, and, of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops.

Malawi is truly an ornithologist’s paradise. Malawi’s people are its greatest plus – warm, friendly, convivial, colourful and effervescent. It is impossible to visit and not to become engaged with the people, but there are now opportunities to spend time locally for a first-hand experience of the karonga-museumcultures, way of life and ceremonies. Several cultural sites and museums are around the country including Mangochi Lake Museum, Livingstonia mission museum and a postal services museum near Zomba. The Cultural & Karonga Museum Centre is well worth a tour. There’s also plenty to discover of Malawi’s past, beginning with the pre-history remains of the Karonga district and the Dedza Stone Age rock paintings.

Other options include boat safaris along the Shire River. For a privately guided pleasure trip of up to a few hours there are several places along the shore and on small islands just offshore. Traditional wooden boats or modern fiberglass speed boats are available. Some trips are more captivating to include fishing along the way. If only one pleasure trip is to be taken, it should be out on a boat on Lake Malawi. Boat excursions are also offered along the upper part of the River Shire, particularly through Liwonde National Park.
