1. King Hassan II Mosque
The biggest must see of Casablanca is the amazing Hassan II Mosque. The largest mosque in Casablanca was commenced in 1980 and opened in 1993 and occupies a site of 9 hectares (22 acres). With beautiful and intricately designed interiors complete with water features, an adjustable roof that can be open to the heavens, a huge hammam in the basement plus striking tile work, King Hassan II boasts an incredibly complex minaret-the tallest in the world standing 200m (656ft) high. It has a prayer hall with an accommodating capacity of 2,500 worshippers inside and another 80,000 in its courtyard making it the world’s second largest religious building after Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca. This awe-inspiring tourist attraction caters for all categories of people who possess an inherent interest in art and architecture; and it’s one of the two major mosques in Morocco open with free admission for long hour-guided tours to male non-Muslims visitors.
2. The Medinas
These are the great new traditionally styled living spaces that sprang up as the city expanded rapidly in the early 1900. Their chief attractions include an 18th-century fortress, a jewellery market and the tomb of Sidi Allal el-Kairouani, who became the city’s patron saint in 1350.
- The Old Medina- North of the Place des Nations Unies is a small traditional walled town in the north of Casablanca. If you are in town it’s worth a visit.
- The New Medina close to boulevard Victor Hugo is known as the Quartier Habous, and was created in early 1930s in original Arabic styles with pleasant flower-bedecked and arcaded streets. Richly carved stucco makes the nearby palace Mahakma du Pacha, a triumph of Arabic decoration.
3. Museum of Moroccan Judaism (The Jewish Museum)
This is a dedicated museum to the history of Jews in Morocco. Sephardic Judaism has a long and interesting history; and Casablanca in the pre-Israel era particularly was known to be one of the most important cities for Sephardic Jews. Much as its existence is slightly controversial (being the first Jewish museum in an Arab country); it’s original in its purpose. Set 5km from the city centre in the suburb of Oasis, the museum contains a large room that is used for various exhibits along with 3 permanent rooms detailing Jewish religious life in Morocco, as well as an entire Moroccan synagogue.
Set in a modern and well-maintained building, there are numerous libraries with collections of document, religious books, video, costumes, sacramental artifacts and pictures reflecting the role that the today 5,000-strong Jewish community has had and continues to play in Morocco. The museum is open with an admission charge of 20DH to guided tours in English, French Arabic and Spanish for 5 week days between 10 a.m. & 6 p.m. and only opens on appointment on Sundays.
4. Sidi Abderrahman’s Shrine
The Shrine is built on a rock off shore well past the Corniche, and is only accessible at low tide. The shrine itself is off-limits to non-Muslims, but visitors are permitted to explore the tiny, medina-like neighborhood that has sprung up around it. A better bet is to walk to it along the beach and catch a view of the beautiful white walls before catching a cab to less remote areas.
