When to Visit Mozambique
The best time for game viewing in Mozambique is towards the end of the winter season, as the animals tend to gather more often and in greater numbers during this drier season than they do in summer.
If you are a bird watching enthusiast November and December are the months to visit. If you are visiting Mozambique for the amazing fishing opportunities the larger fish tend to populate the waters in summer months while the small to medium sized fish are more prolific in winter. It is not advisable to visit during January and February, as Typhoons have always created havoc along the Mozambique coast.

1. New Years’ Day, 1 January

2. Heroes’ Day, 3 February

3. Women’s Day, 7 April

4. Labour Day, 1 May

5. Independence Day, 25 June

6. Victory Day, 7 September

7. Armed Forces Day, 25 September

8. Peace Day, 4 October

9. Defunct’s Day, 2 November

Gorongosa National Park is remotely situated in a 4,000 sq km section of the Great Rift Valley system north of Beira; in a stunning area with the majestic 1,800-metre high massif Mount Gorongosa in the backdrop. It has approximately 3,770 sq km of savannah, woodlands, and rainforest in central Mozambique, Southern Africa. The real asset of Gorongosa National Park is its intriguing diversity of animals, birds and plants – some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Guided trails up Mount Gorongosa enable visitors to easily observe the several kinds of forest and rare plants, wonderful birdlife, gorgeous waterfalls and the view from the top is breathtaking.

Resting Lion

The Ecosystems
The rain and the seasonal inundation of the valley mix up with numerous soil types to produce a unique mosaic of distinct ecosystems. The plains are dotted with acacia savanna, dry forests in sandy areas, wetlands or pans seasonally filled by the rains, and thickets on termite-built mounds. The plateaus contain Miombo and montane forests, as well as a spectacular rainforest at the bottom of a series of limestone gorges. Mount Gorongosa has rainforests, montane grasslands, riverine forests along its rivers, and forests and savanna woodlands at lower elevations. Both plateaus are covered with a kind of closed-canopy savanna, widespread in southern Africa

Gorongosa animal

Wildlife
Gorongosa National Park offers shelter to a wide range of wildlife including the Big Five (lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, and rhino). Other wildlife include hippo, crocodile, kudu, nyala, waterbuck, reedbuck, serval cat, zebra, civet, oribi, lichenstein’s hartebeest, impala, sable, bushbuck, warthog, bush pig, chacma baboon and vervet monkey.
On safari tours, watching these wild animals is a unique and cheerful wildlife experience to most park visitors. On night drives in particular, visitors are guaranteed sight of porcupines, genets, civets and servals. Lake Urema and its waterways support healthy populations of crocodiles and over 200 hippos.
Bird Life
Thousands of birds settle on Lake Urema and one can literally sit for hours watching fish eagles swoop down, spoonbills forage, lilies, herons and stock pluck fish.

Information on Mozambique travel; Mozambique Safety Travel; Medical Information; Entry / Exit Requirements; Traveling Mozambique; Security in Mozambique; Travel tips and more
About Mozambique
Mozambique, a former Marxist state is located on the southern coast of Eastern Africa. This Portuguese-speaking country is neighboured by Zimbabwe in the West; Tanzania in the North; Malawi and Zambia in the Northwest; Swaziland and South Africa in the Southwest; and the Indian Ocean in the East. Maputo, located in the south is the capital city and was established in 1544. It gained self rule on June 25, 1975 from Portugal.
Weather in Mozambique
Mozambique has a tropical climate which means that temperatures are in the high 20’s all year round. The rainy season occurs during the hotter summer months of October – March and April – September; while the winter months of April – September are cooler and dry. Tropical cyclone seasons run from November to April and coastal areas should be avoided ‘ flooding may also occur during these months. You should monitor latest weather updates information with local media especially if traveled during this time.
Currency
1 Mozambican Metical = 100 centavos. USD or Pounds Sterling traveler’s cheques are acceptable. Change money at designated places. Credit cards are not widely accepted. A large number of merchants prefer USD. Import and export of local currency is prohibited.
Visa Information
A visa is not needed but your passport should be valid for at east three months after your intended return. If you’re taking a car over the border, the registration papers are essential. Third-party insurance is compulsory in Mozambique – you can buy it at the border for R150 per car and R80 per trailer. Passports must be valid for six months minimum. Return tickets plus proof of income during your stay is required. It is plausible to obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before setting off.
Safety Tips
In general crime rate in Mozambique is not so pronounced; however Maputo and busier cities are becoming increasing targets for tourist pick-pocketing or muggings. Visitors should be cautious when using ATM’s on the streets and keep valuables out of sight and secure. Roads are often in very bad condition so be cautious when driving particularly in the late evening because of poor lighting. Bad driving is common. Only travel by road outside Maputo and other major cities during daylight.
Health Tips
Mozambique health is typical of any African country, with health facilities ranging from average to poor. Malaria is rife in many areas, and other health risks include untreated water, cholera, Rift Valley Fever and plague. Take a first aid kit and vitamins, and follow basic health precautions to ensure that you stay healthy on your Mozambique travels.
HIV/AIDS is a serious epidemic in the country, with an extremely high rate of 12.5% in adults of 15 years and older. This amounts to an estimated 1,400,000 people living with HIV or AIDS. About 56% of HIV/AIDS cases occur in women, while the child AIDS numbers are also worrying. Travelers are cautioned over this threat. Malaria risks are the most prevalent for travelers, so it is imperative that you consult your doctor as to what medication you should be taking before you actually set off for your Mozambique holiday. Vaccinations against cholera, typhoid and poliomyelitis are equally paramount. Maintain strict food and water hygiene. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter the country.
Security Tip
Mozambique like many other tourist destinations is prone to cases of opportunistic crime. It is therefore advisable that you are aware of your personal safety and of your valuables especially bags, cameras and mobile phones. Be vigilant at all times. Avoid walking alone in isolated areas.

Mozambique enjoys a warm, tropical climate comprising of 2 distinct seasons; with temperature averaging around 28°C. The weather is warm and sunny all year round, ideal for maximum enjoyment of the countries coastal charms.
The summer months, from October to April, are often very hot, humid and rainy. From April to September, the winter months are cooler, drier and more comfortable for visitors not accustomed to heat and humidity normally associated with the warm season in tropical areas. Also important to note is that temperatures and rainfall patterns in the country vary greatly between the regions. The higher-lying Nampula and Niassa provinces are the coolest, whereas the north-eastern coastal regions are the extremely hot. The northern region receives far more rainfall than the south.
Best Time To Visit
If you’re hoping for a Mozambique safari, the best time of year to visit is between May and November. This is the time when both rainfall and temperatures are at their lowest with pleasant temperatures between 20 to 29°C. This drier season normally sees animals congregating in larger groups than they do in summer. The summer months offer excellent fishing opportunities with the larger fish populating the coastal waters during this time of the year.
It is also not appropriate to travel during the extremely wet season between February and April. This period is characteristic of floods and strong monsoon winds.
Travelers that can withstand the high temperatures at the start of the warmer, rainy season from November to late January can also possibly travel. Annual festive holidays such as Easter, Christmas and New Year’s are peak travel times in Mozambique, advance flight bookings and vacation rentals are highly recommended.
But in general, Mozambique is a tourist-friendly destination all year-round.

Other national Parks and reserves include Quirimbas, Bazaruto, Gorongosa, Banhine, Zinave, Limpopo; Maputo Special Reserve, Gilé National Reserve, Pomene National Reserve and Chimanimani National Reserve.

Maputo City

You may also not want to miss the stunning Bazaruto Archipelago – which comprises five tropical islands plus surrounding islets and coral reefs, 20km from coast of Vilanculos and Inhassoro. This beautiful area features beautiful white sandy beaches, sky blue clear waters, rich marine life, abundant bird species and lovely coral reefs.

For hikers, the cool mountains of the north and several national parks offer good hiking but advice and extreme caution should be taken due to the large amount of leftover landmines in the country after the war.

With all this variety of Mozambique tourism at hand, surely you may not wish to lose life without at tour to Africa’s wonderland, Mozambique.

It however plausible to note that despite its tourism wealth and strategic proximity to one of the world’s top tourist destinations South Africa, Mozambique has the lowest tourists turn up numbers in the southern African region. This can be attributed to the civil strife which the country underwent between 1977 and 1992 devastating the tourism industry and wildlife conservation.

Enjoy your Mozambique Tour!
