Discovering Niger
Niger is a landlocked country located in West Africa along the boundaries of the Sahara and Sub-Saharan desert belts. Named after the Niger River, it shares borders with seven countries; Algeria and Libya in the north, Burkina Faso and Mali in the west, Nigeria and Benin in the south and Chad in the east.
The country covers a land area of about 1,270,000 sq km, of which 80% is the Sahara desert. The capital city is Niamey. The lowest point is the Niger River, with elevation of 200m while Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès in the Aïr Massif at 2,022 m is the highest point.
The country’s predominantly Islamic population of just above 15,000,000 is mostly clustered in the far south and west areas.
Niger remains limited to economic prosperity by its landlocked location, scanty resource base, arid topography plus the irritancy and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure and environmental degradation.
Niger is an independent, democratically governed republic that lies to the north of Nigeria. Much of the country lies within the Sahara Desert belt, and forms part of the landlocked West African Region. French official language is although a number of other African languages are also spoken.
Getting There
All International flights to Niger touch down at Niamey and Agades airports. International Airlines with Niger Flights are Air Afrique and Air France. Several regional airports with domestic flights within the country are available at Arlit, Diffa, Tahoua and Zinder.
