Business and leisure travelers visit Nigeria because of its eye-catching things to see and enjoy among them being its historical sites and national parks. Acknowledging the surge in the number of visitors, many Airports both local and international started operations in the country. Tourists from all around the world come to visit Nigeria. The country has 22 airports with paved runways. Of these, there four prominent International Airports which include;
Murtala Mohammed International Airport
This is one of the leading airports in Africa. It is a top international air passenger gateway to Nigeria. The airport is located in the northern suburb of Ikeja and has Domestic and International Terminals. With 5.1 million passengers in 2008, the airport accounts for nearly 50% of all air traffic in Nigeria. Murtala Mohammed Airport accounts for the majority of all air passengers traveling to and from Nigeria. The airport has recently undergone upgrades along with the addition of a new terminal. Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos is a traditionally famous jump-on jump-off point in Nigeria. International Airlines that operate services at the airport include Air France, Bellview Airlines etc. Destinations Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Douala, Libreville. Domestic Airlines include Arik Air, Chanchangi Airlines, Aero Contractors and Virgin Nigeria.
Port Harcourt International Airport
Port Harcourt International Airport is located in Port Harcourt, a city in the Rivers State of Nigeria. It is the main airport serving southeastern Nigeria. The airport consists of a single terminal with separate facilities for domestic and international flights. Statistics show that in 2004, the airport handled 781,046 passengers. The airport under went refurbishment in 2006 and was closed for this purpose. The Airport is also administered and controlled by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. Port Harcourt International Airport also handles domestic flights with support from Imo Airport. International Airlines operating at the airport include
Air France, Bellview Airlines Air France, and British Airways with destinations in Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Douala, Libreville, London, and Newcastle. Domestic Airlines include Arik Air, Chanchangi Airlines, Aero Contractors and Virgin Nigeria.
Other prominent International Airports are Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Margaret Ekpo International Airport. Others are Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Sadiq Abubakar III International Airport and many others.
Some of the major domestic airports include: Enugu Airport, Akure Airport, Yakubu Gowon Airport, Kaduna Airport, Sultan Saddik Abubakar Airport, Yola Airport, Bauchi Airport and Benin Airport. There are also 21 Airstrips built mainly by the Nigerian air force and multinational oil companies scattered about the country.
