Yankari Game Reserve is Nigeria’s most sought game reserve for wildlife safaris located in the south-central part of Bauchi State, in northeastern Nigeria. It covers an area of approximately 2,240 sq km and 2,058 sq. km. of savanna woodland. It is composed of savannah grassland with well-developed patches of woodland. It is also a region of rolling hills, mostly between 200m and 400m. Kariyo Hill is the highest point at 640m.
Yankari, designated 1956 and opened to the public in 1962 has become one of the most popular eco-destinations in West Africa. The park is managed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Parks Service.
Yankari Game Reserve also features water springs. Wikki Warm Springs situated around the Gaji River flow daily over 21,000,000 litres of clear spring water into the river. These scenic springs flavour the reserve’s beauty and offer one of the best features of the game reserve to tourists. The spring gushes out from under a cliff, where the water is at least 6 ft. deep extending for 600 ft. to an open area. The springs usually have constant temperatures of 31.1°C all year during both day and night and have now been developed for recreation.
Wildlife
Yankari is an important refuge for wildlife resources in Nigeria. Over 50 species of mammal can be spotted here including African Bush Elephant, Olive Baboon, Western Hartebeest, Lion, African Buffalo, Waterbuck, Warthog, Roam Antelope, Bushbuck, Patas Monkey, Tantalus Monkey and Hippopotamus. Lions are occasionally spotted as well, despite their natural camouflage.
Important to note also is that Yankari home to the largest populations of elephants in West Africa with estimates of around 500. The heavy concentration of the elephant however has created a dilemma to the surrounding localities at times as the animals attack local farms during the rainy season.
Bird Life
There are also over 350 species of bird found in the Park. Of these, 130 are resident, 50 are Palearctic migrants and the rest are intra-African migrants that move locally within Nigeria.
Recorded species of birds here include White-rumped Vulture, Guinea Fowl, Cattle Egret, Grey Hornbill, and the Saddle-billed Stork; others are the golliath heron, bateleur eagle, vultures, kingflshers, bee-eaters and more. This variety offers excellent opportunities for adventurous bird-watchers.

Aside for the abundant flora and fauna, the park also take pride in several archeological, cultural and historical preserves such as the Dukkey Well System and the Ampara and the furnace shafts which are great historical assets. It also has a large and diverse freshwater ecosystem around its freshwater springs as well as the Gaji River.

The Park provides an attractive setting, well worth a visit. Usually this reserve is said to be different from the rest of Nigeria with regard to flora and fauna as it is home to some rare species of birds and animals.

Where to Stay

Basic accommodations at Yankari are varied, from hostels for youth and budget travelers to “presidential” chalets. Also available are luxury suites, double rooms and family camp chalets with facilities such as restaurants, bars, Indoor and outdoor sports facilities, swimming options especially at Wikki camp. Other facilities include: Tennis & squash courts, a small museum in the reception area plus gas stations with convenience stores at Wikki Camp and Bauchi.

Getting There

By Air: Chatter a domestic flight and land at Yola Airport from where you can then drive a few miles south to Mambilla.

By Road: Alternatively to get there by road, there is a major road route from Lagos to Mambilla. Also note that it can take 2-days by car over well-maintained roads to get there. The Park’s main entrance is at Mainamaji village, about 29 km from Dindima.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Yankari Game Reserve is between November and May, when tourists are likely to see more game since the dense vegetation has dried out and the animals congregate around the rivers. The park is popular with Japanese, Western Europeans, Americans and Southeast Asian tourists. Tourists usually arrange walking tours or guided tours on specially adapted trucks. Visitors’ reservations in the reserve can be made at Durbar Hotel in Kaduna, Bauchi State House and at the Zaranda Hotel in Bauchi.

Quick Facts about Nigeria

Independence; 1 October 1960

National holiday; Independence 1 October, 1960

Currency; naira.

Languages; English –official, others are; Hausa, Yoruba, Ibo, Fulani, Efik, Ejagham, Urhobo, Edo

Geography

Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation is situated in equatorial West Africa. It has a southern coastline on the Gulf of Guinea, and has Benin to the west, Cameroon to the southeast, Chad to the northeast, and Niger to the northwest. It is the largest oil producer and second largest economy in Africa. Nigeria is a former British colony and a member of the British Commonwealth. Nigeria is positioned at the extreme inner corner of the Gulf of Guinea on the west coast of Africa. On 12 December 1991, the capital was officially transferred from Lagos to Abuja; most federal government offices have now made the move to Abuja.

Following nearly 16 years of military rule, a new constitution was adopted in May 1999, and a peaceful transition to civilian government was completed. The president faces the daunting task of rebuilding a petroleum-based economy, whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement, and institutionalizing democracy.

It dominates West Africa economically and politically, and has produced music and literature whose influence spreads far beyond the continent. But for all this clout, mention the country’s name to the person on the street and they’re more likely to come up with a litany of woe: corruption, ethnic violence and email scams.

Culture & People

If you are speaking the language, some of the languages have different ways of addressing those older than you, from those younger than you. You do not hand things over to people, especially adults and elders older than you, with your left hand. It’s considered an insult. When entering a house in the predominantly Muslim North, you have to let them know in advance that you are visiting so that the women can prepare themselves by covering up both hair and bodies as required by Islam.

Tourist Attractions

Nigeria is a country we’re coming to love. Getting around can sometimes be a little tough, and it’s certainly a challenging destination for first-timers to Africa. Lagos is one of the most exuberant cities in Africa, while Port city Calabar makes for an enjoyable stopover for travelers on their way to Cameroon. Across Southern Nigeria, old kingdoms carry on their customs, from creating elaborate brass sculptures to venerating the ancient gods. More modern traditions include one of the world’s pioneering primate conservation organizations. In the north, where the land dries out as it stretches towards the desert, Muslim Nigeria thrives in dusty trade cities where memories of the Saharan trade routes still linger. Don’t miss West Africa’s oldest city Kano and Yankari National Park, the best in the country.

Getting there & around

By Air; there are several African companies: South African Airlines from Johannesburg, Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, Kenya Airways from Nairobi, Afriqya from Tripoli and Hewa Bora from Kinshasa. Also are several European airlines fly to Nigeria: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France, Alitalia, Turkish Airline, Lufthansa, Iberia Airlines. Other inter-continental airlines fly to Nigeria including China Southern Airlines, Emirates, Middle East Airlines and Qatar Airways. There are International airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.

By Road; road networks in Nigeria are relatively poor compared with North American and European countries. However, getting around is relatively easy, except that there could be delays due to traffic jams within most major cities. There are multitudes of coaches and buses that will take you to any part of Nigeria you wish. The okada (motorcycle) is not for the faint-hearted (no helmets) and should only be used for short distance journeys. “Okadas” will get you to where you want to go quickly and you will get there in one piece.

When to Travel

Nigeria’s climate varies; equatorial in the south, tropical in the center, arid in the north. Natural hazards include periodic droughts and flooding. Tornadoes and hurricanes are rare because they typically are weak at this stage and travel west of the Atlantic. For travel to the south, March to August is the wettest season to visit Nigeria, and best avoided if possible. Temperatures are hot year-round, peaking in the spring; the humidity is constant.

Calling Nigeria; Dialing into Nigeria: callers use +234, then phone digit numbers.

Travel Alert! The security situation in northern Nigeria is unstable and violence is not uncommon; travelers should exercise extreme caution. Kidnappings and attacks on foreign oil workers are an ongoing threat in the Bakassi Peninsula and Niger Delta regions of Nigeria.

Nigerian petroleum is the most essential resources of Nigeria. Alongside other mineral products such as natural gas, oil is found in plenty in Nigeria. Nigerian oil is very much in demand throughout the country and the world. Due to the growing population of Nigeria, the demand for oil and petroleum products have increased enormously. Oil in Nigeria is utilized to a much greater extent than any other mineral product. Almost 58% of oil is used up within Nigeria as domestic consumption. The rest of the Nigerian oil is exported to other foreign countries, which generate a huge amount of revenue.
Oil Refineries
The plentiful existence of natural oil in Nigeria has resulted into the establishment of many oil refining centers across the country. The Niger Delta Oil Refineries are famous all over the world. These oil refineries are extremely proficient at producing quality oil. The International Refineries of Amakpe is pretty prominent and deals with the business of crude oil. It is an American company that is doing great business in Nigeria. It is one of the oil refineries that transform crude oil into petroleum products. There are three oil refineries in Nigeria namely the refinery at Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna.

Lagos is the most populous metropolitan area in Nigeria with 7,937,932 inhabitants at the 2006 census. It is currently the second most populous city in Africa, and currently estimated to be the second fastest growing city in Africa after Bamako. From the beginning, Lagos has spread on the mainland west of the lagoon and the conurbation, including Ikeja and Agege, now reaches more than 40 km north-west of Lagos Island. The city is the economic and financial capital of Nigeria.

Lagos was declared its capital 1914. Lagos experienced rapid growth throughout the 1960s and 1970s as a result of Nigeria’s economic boom prior to the Biafran War.
Lagos was the capital of Nigeria from 1914 up to 1991; it was stripped of this title when the Federal Capital Territory was established at the purpose-built city of Abuja. However, most government functions stayed in Lagos for a time since Abuja was still under construction.
Lagos is also home to many of Nigeria’s Financial Institutions, Banks and Insurance Companies. The Port of Lagos is Nigeria’s leading port and one of the largest in Africa. It is administered by the Nigerian Port Authority and is split into three main sections. The port features a railhead.
The port has seen growing amounts of crude oil exported, with export figures rising between 1997 and 2000. Oil and petroleum products provide 20% of GDP and 95% of foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria as a whole. Lagos has one of the largest and most extensive road networks in West Africa. It is linked by many highways and bridges. Local roads in Lagos vary in quality from well-maintained to pothole-ridden. Most freeways are in good shape.
Lagos is Nigeria’s most prosperous city, and much of the nation’s wealth and economic activity are concentrated there. Most commercial, financial and business centers of Lagos and of Nigeria remains at the Central Business District in Lagos Island which is also typified with the presence of high rise buildings. This is also where most of the country’s largest banks and financial institutions and headquarters of big corporations are located. Lagos has one of the highest standards of living as compared to other cities in Nigeria as well as in Africa at large. Lagos is famous throughout West Africa for its music scene. Lagos has given birth to a variety of styles such as highlife, juju, Fuji, and Afrobeat.
Lagos is the center of the Nigerian film industry, often referred to as Nollywood.
The cinemas are gradually losing their supporters to the movie industry. Yoruba-spoken films happen to be the most watched in the cinemas, followed by Indian films. Films are not premiered for a long period of time in the western sense, especially with Yoruba-spoken films. The English spoken films controlled mainly by the Igbo are the most popular and move directly from the studios to the market

Igbo also referred to as the Ibo are an ethnic group found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Delta and Rivers State in southeastern Nigeria. Prominent towns and cities in Igbo land include Aba, Owerri, Enugu, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Afikpo, Agbor, Orlu, Okigwe, Umuahia, Asaba and Port Harcourt among others. They speak Igbo, although today a majority of them speak English alongside Igbo as a result of British colonialism. Igbo are one of the 3 most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria, the other two being the Hausa and the Yoruba people.
Migrations and the Atlantic slave trade, significantly affected their identity. Many moved to neighboring countries of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea as well as outside Africa. Their exact population outside Africa is unknown, but today many African Americans are of Igbo descent. Their occupation is predominantly farming, with the yam being the most common crop. Other staple crops are cassava, and taro. Annually they hold festivals to celebrate harvesting season.
Before colonialism, the Igbo were a culturally fragmented group with variations vivid in customs and traditions such as visual art, music and dance forms, as well as their attire, cuisine and language dialects. Various subgroups were set according to clan, lineage, village affiliation and dialect. Because of their various subgroups, the range of their culture was so pronounced. The attire of the Igbo generally consisted of little clothing as the purpose of clothing originally was to conceal private parts, although elders were fully clothed. Children were usually nude from birth till their adolescence but occasionally ornaments such as beads were worn around the waist for spiritual reasons. Uli body art was used to decorate both men and women in the form of lines forming patterns and shapes on the body.
Like Yoruba, Igbo is a tonal language. Igbo language boasts of hundreds of different dialects such as the Ikwerre and Ekpeye. Politically there weren’t many centralized hereditary customs except in kingdoms like that of the Nri, Arochukwu and Onitsha. However, this significantly changed in the 19th Century under British colonization.
Marriage usually involves asking the young woman’s consent, introducing the woman to the man’s family and the same for the man to the woman’s family, testing the bride’s character, checking the woman’s family background and paying the brides wealth. Sometimes marriages had been arranged from birth through negotiation of the two families. Polygamy is a common practice in Igbo men. Men married usually multiple wives for economic reasons so as to have more people in the family, including children, to help on farms. Igbo people now tend to enter monogamous courtships and create nuclear families.
Women traditionally carry their babies on their backs with a strip of clothing binding the two with a knot at her chest, a practice used by many ethnic groups across Africa.
Men would wear loin cloths that wrapped round their waist and between their legs to be fastened at their back.
Modern Igbo traditional attire, for men, is generally made up of the Isiagu top which resembles the Dashiki worn by other African groups. Isiagu is usually patterned with lions heads embroidered over the clothing and can be a plain color. It is worn with trousers and can be worn with the traditional Igbo stripped men’s hat. For women, a puffed sleeve blouse along with two wrappers and a head gear are worn.

Located in the centre of Nigeria, Abuja is the capital city in the Federal Capital Territory. Abuja legitimately attained this status on 12 December 1991 replacing the role of the previous capital Lagos. Abuja whose estimated population stands at 1,078,700 people is divided into 5 major districts -the Central, Garki, Maitama, Wuse, and Asokoro. Well planned Abuja’s is a multi-purpose built city whose geography has been modified by the two renowned rock formations around it- the Zuma Rock and the Aso Rock. Aso Rock- is a 400m above sea-level monolith that was left by erosion. The imposing Zuma Rock usually referred to as the ‘Gateway to Abuja’ is situated off the main road from Abuja to Kaduna where the state of Niger ends. This is definitely worth a visit. It is also reported to be the exact geographical center of Nigeria.
The master plan for Abuja defines the general structure and major design elements of the city that are visible in its current form. Abuja is the home of The National Assembly, Presidential Complex, and Supreme Court. States also relocated their embassies here. Abuja also doubles as home of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and has the regional headquarters of OPEC. Giant shopping malls, pharmacies and many government reservation areas are seen it the city.
It is a religious city and home of the National Mosque and the National Christian Centre. The city is served by an ultra modern Airport Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Along the Airport Road are clusters of satellite settlements, namely Pyakassa, Chika, Lugbe and Kuchigworo The population on the semi-developed edges of the city lives in shanty towns such as Karu which initially was planned to house civil servants as well as lower income families. The city has experienced enormous population escalation, also reported documented that some areas around it have been growing at 20 to 30% annually. Squatter settlements and towns have spread rapidly in and outside the city limits. Abuja’s supremacy to these heights came as a result of Lagos’ population boom that made that city overcrowded and conditions unclean.

Another interesting attraction is the Abuja Plant Nursery at the foot of Aso Rock. This botanical garden has an amazing collection of species of flowers, fruits, trees and many other plants. Several facilities and amenities to attract tourists are gradually coming up in the vicinity. In Africa, this city is famously known as being one of the wealthiest with classy surroundings. It’s indeed a beautiful place to be that it requires a day’s trip for anyone before life expires.

Lagos is a port and the most populous city in Nigeria and is currently estimated to be the second fastest growing city in Africa after Cairo. The city boasts a number of interesting and beautiful Tourist Attractions in Lagos. As such tourists visit Lagos from every corner of the world round the year. Lagos is a coastal city situated in the country of Nigeria. Lagos is one of the prominent cities of the country of Nigeria.
Lagos Lagoon has become one of the important Tourist Attractions in Lagos. The name of this place has been connected with the city of Lagos. The Lagos Lagoon stretches about a large area. A large sand pit which is about 2 to 5 km wide separates the Lagoon from the great Atlantic Ocean. You will find that one part of the Lagos Lagoon is very moist in nature.
Lagos city is home to the National Museum for tourists to journey through time to see Lagos’ birthright. Relics and treasures are kept safe in the museum to display the culture of this city. Exhibits include the Treasures of Ancient Nigeria for the past two thousand years worth of treasures to view. Included in the collection is the Mercedes that Murtala Mohammed, the former president that was assassinated during 1973. Crafts and brass are among the local articles of artistry on display and nearby for souvenirs.

Lagos also has a Harbour which is constructed in the form of a channel. This harbor runs through the centre of Lagos Lagoon in Lagos. It is with the help of this Lagos Harbour that Lagoon drains into the Atlantic Ocean. The Harbour also covers a large area in the city.
Lagos has very shallow waters. As a result you will not be able to see many ocean-going ships in lagoon. However you will find numerous smaller barges and boats in lagoon. Water transport is the important mode of transportation on the west region of Lagoon. The reason for choosing water transport as the main medium is that road transportation is not good enough in this part of Lagos.
There are several places of Tourist Attractions in Lagos which you can visit during your tours to Lagos including Meia Praia Beach, Delegaçao da Alfândega and Praca Gil Eanes.
Climate
Lagos experiences a tropical savanna climate. There are two rainy seasons, with the heaviest rains falling from April to July and a lighter rainy season coming between October and November. There is a short relatively dry spell in August and September and a longer dry season from December to March. Monthly rainfall between May and July averages over 300 mm while in August and September it is down to 75 mm and in January as low as 35 mm. The major dry season is accompanied by harmattan winds from the Sahara Desert, which becomes strong between December and early February. The average temperature in January is 27°C and for July it is 25°C. On average the hottest month is March; with a mean temperature of 29°C while July is the coolest month.

Nigeria happens to be the most populous country of Africa. As a matter of fact the Nigerian people comprise a population with the highest density in the whole world. People in Nigeria give great importance to religion. 45% of the population is Christian, 45% Muslim and the rest 10% is a mix of quite a few indigenous religions. However as Nigeria culture is multi-ethnic there used to be quite a few religions and deities.
People of Nigeria traditionally used to worship many inanimate objects. Ancestor worship was also largely practiced by many tribal groups of Nigeria. The most popular among the innumerable ethnic groups in Nigeria are Ibo or Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa-Faluni. Yoruba people mostly occupy the southern parts on Nigeria. The Ibo or Igbo group stays in the south eastern states of Nigeria. The Hausa-Faluni stays in the northern Nigeria.
The birth rate among the Nigerian people is about 43.26 per 1000 people, while the death rate is 12.01 per 1000 people. The life expectancy for the total population of the Nigerian people is 55.98 years, with 54.69 years for males and 57.3 years for females. The fertility rate is about 6.31 children born per woman. The population growth rate is 3.16%. However the unity among the Nigerian people, in spite of being ethnically diverse, is definitely something unique.

Where to Go
Nigeria is home to many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks that are home to many endangered species. These are the primary tourist spots in Nigeria. The small villages of Nigeria are also worth visiting as the rural lives of Nigerians can be experienced at close quarters. The enchanting forests, the savanna grasslands and the lush green vegetation provide the tourists a wide range of safari experiences. The beaches situated along the coast linings of Nigeria such as Coconut beach, Lekki and Eleko beaches are central tourist spots.
Where to Stay
Some of the most famous hotels where tourists can reside are Sheraton Lagos Hotel and Towers, Abuja Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Nicon Hilton Abuja, Bristol Hotel and Savoy Suites Nigeria. Vacation in Nigeria is one of the most wonderful vacations that elevate the heart and mind of travelers. Planned Nigeria vacations or long holidays to Nigeria allow travelers to enjoy quite and tranquil rural Nigerian life away from the humdrum of their city lives. The ideal time for a Nigeria vacation is during the months of November, December, January, February and March.
Car Hire in Nigeria
A hire car is by far the best way to see and enjoy Nigeria. Most major car hire companies are represented at Nigeria airports as are several local firms. After a long flight to Nigeria however it can be a tedious and frustrating to hire a car on arrival. We strongly advise advance reservations for car rental in Nigeria using Kasbah’s international system. Visitors to Nigeria from the UK can use the car hire in Nigeria service. Visitors to Nigeria from North America should use the car rental in Nigeria service.

Wildlife parks are among the principal attractions in Nigeria and visits to national parks are exceedingly enjoyable by the tourists. The country has five national parks and majority of them concentrate and take care on the well-being of Nigerian wildlife. The government works immensely in order to maintain the safety of wildlife in these national parks properly. These parks are essentially seen as wildlife reserves for the country. The African continent is famous worldwide for its dense forests and wildlife reserves, which are also the chief attractions for the tourists.
NATIONAL PARKS IN NIGERIA
Kainji National Park: This Park is located in the Kwara state and was established in 1979. The Kainji national park has two animal reserves Borgu.and Zurugama. Both the reserves cover a wide variety of animals in a big number. It covers a landscape of 5,299sq.kms. There is Kainji dam in this park, which is an additional attraction.
Yankari Game Reserve: This Park 225km east of Jos is Nigeria’s best national park for observing wildlife. The park still holds reasonable numbers of buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck and plenty of baboons. The biggest draw is the 500-strong population of elephant and it’s possible that lion may also survive. The bird-watching is excellent. The best time to see animals is from late December to late April, before the rains, when the thirsty animals congregate at the Gaji River. Yankari’s other attraction is the Wikki Warm Spring near the park camp site.
Gashaka-Gumti National Park: The biggest national park in Nigeria that covers the landscape of 6,000sq.kms. It includes the highest number of wild animals; some of them belong to the endangered species. The dense forests and rivers in the national park are excellent for fishing. There is forest reserves headquarter that keeps a strict watch on the poachers and also take care of the well-being of the animals. There is a rest house for visitors situated on the main road of Mambila plateau and Bali.
Cross river National Park: This Park is famous among the tourists in all around the world as it is among the few last rain forests of the world. The moist green vegetation cover creates an excellent place to see birds and butterflies.
The Park was created from two existing forest reserves of Bashi-Okwango and Oban Forest Reserves. This park contains the last remaining rain forest in Nigeria, which is being preserved with the help of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. It has a herd of forest elephants, the white-faced monkey (original to only Nigeria), wild buffaloes, leopards and lowland gorillas. A large number of tourists come to visit the park. The park has a tropical climate characterized by a rainy season between April and October and a dry season between November and April.
Okonni Wildlife Sanctuary: This Wildlife Sanctuary is jointly managed by the Edo State Government and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.

Nigeria has over 22 Airports with paved runways of which four are international airports are Murtala Muhammed International Airport-located in the suburb of Ikeja, 22km northwest of Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport-3km (5 miles) north of Kano; Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport-35km (22 miles) from Abuja; and Gombe Lawanti International Airport in Gombe. Port Harcourt Airport has recently undergone refurbishment.

There are also 21 Airstrips built mainly by the Nigerian air force and multinational oil companies scattered about the country. The Federal Government owns and operates all the airports in Nigeria through its regulatory body, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
There is a good choice of Airlines for your flight to the country.

Currently Nigeria doesn’t have a National Airline, so competition on domestic flights is severe. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, but no single Airline has really emerged from the pack yet — for example, there are up to 10 Airlines offering flights between Lagos and Abuja at any one time. However we would advise travelers that those Airlines which stretch their tentacles outside Nigeria are more trustworthy than those which don’t.

There are several Nigeria Flights from all major UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Aberdeen, New Castle, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Teesside, Humberside to Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt with all the leading Airlines such as KLM, Egypt Air, Afriqiyah, Alitalia, Emirates, British Airways.Other Airlines offering domestic Nigeria flights include Chanchangi Airlines-the country’s largest domestic airline and flies between Lagos and Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Owerri. Arik Air connects Abuja with Benin, Calabar, Enugu, Lagos and Port Harcourt. Arik Air operates from the general aviation terminal. Virgin Nigeria, a venture between Virgin Atlantic and private investors, flies from Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos to Abuja, Kano, Owerri, Sokoto and Calabar. Also to note, Opodo is the only major consolidator offering cheap Nigeria flights from the UK.
Virgin Nigeria have also suspended their London to Lagos flights in order to concentrate on their short-haul services, while relative newcomer Arik Air, who offer flights from Heathrow to Lagos, have rapidly become a major player on the Nigerian domestic scene.
Of recent, most domestic flights from Lagos Murtala Muhammed international airport operate from the brand new domestic “MMA II” terminal close to half a mile from the international terminal. In late 2008, British Airways announced they were re-scheduling their Lagos flights to arrive by 6pm, specifically because of concerns over the persistent traffic congestion on the routes connecting the airport with Lagos Island and Victoria Island.

Nigeria, the 32nd largest country on earth is Africa’s most populous nation and leading oil producer. It is an attractive coastal destination with a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea with Niger, Benin, Chad and Cameroon as neighbors. Much as the country has been sunk in years of civil war, military dictatorships and sectarian conflicts among Nigeria’s 250 tribes as well as tensions between the Muslim population and the Christian population, who live in the oil-producing south, Nigeria still upholds its most appealing tourist destination status in Africa. The country is known as the “giant of Africa” certainly due to its size and petroleum wealth.
Nigeria is a diverse state with pronounced geographical scenery. The Obudu Hills, for instance in the southeast give way to great beaches. In the middle and southwest of Nigeria are rainforest, the Lagos estuary and savannah. The Sahel melts into the Sahara in the north. In addition, Nigeria takes pride in several National Parks including Old Oyo, Yankari, and Cross River National Parks.
History
The origin settlers of present Nigeria were thought to have been the Nok people in the early centuries. The Kanuri, Hausa, and Fulani settlers consequently migrated there. The Fulani Empire ruled the region from the beginning of the 19th century until the British annexed Lagos in 1851 and seized control of the rest of the region by 1886. It formally became the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914. During World War I, native troops of the West African frontier force joined with French forces to defeat the German garrison in Cameroon. Islam was introduced in the country in the 13th century.
Yankari Game Reserve; this is found in the north east and believed to have Nigeria’s only remaining wildlife. On about 2,244sq km, it boasts of more than 50 species of creature including elephants, baboons, antelopes, lions and buffaloes and over 350 species of bird including stork, vulture and egret. It also poses with natural warm water springs.
The Cross River National Park is made up of two forest reserves (Bashi-Okwango and Oban Forest) and has the last remaining rain forest in Nigeria. At home in the park are forest elephants, the indigenous white-faced monkey, lowland gorillas, leopards and buffalo.
Climate
Nigeria experiences more than one climate: the north is dry, south is equatorial and the centre is tropical. With these 3 types, the weather always ranges between warm to hot, though with some rainy seasons. The coastal areas experience 2 rainy seasons between May to June, and later in October, while the north has a long dry spell running from October to April.
Nigeria generally climate is humid sub-tropical, but there are variations across the country. Along the coast temperatures top 32 degrees (C) and humidity is a factor. In inland areas, the wet season extends from April to October and the dry season runs from November to March. Temperatures during the dry season can reach 40 degrees; hot days and cold nights. June is a month of heavy rainfall in the south; and the dusty harmattan winds blow between December and January.
Nigeria is a year-round destination that with much ease you can book a cheap Nigeria flight. The country’s splendid hotel facilities and lodges are also inspirational.
