Yankari Game Reserve: This is the most pop­ular game reserve in Nigeria. It is located approximately southeast of Bauchi Town Elephant around the Gagi River; the reserve covers 2,058 sq km. of savanna wood­land. It is home to a multitude of animals including

waterbucks, roan antelope, baboons, bushbucks, elephants, crocodiles, hippopotamus, buffaloes and several monkeys. Lions are rarely spotted. The park boasts a variety of bird species including saddlebill stork, vultures, golliath heron, bateleur eagle, kingfishers, bee-eaters and more. It is excellent for serious bird-watchers. The Park is best visited between November and May when the game gathers near water bodies.

Gashaka-Gumti National Park: This is a vast land of spectacular wilderness in the southeast corner of Taraba State. It is the most ecologically diverse conservation area in the country and contains swaths of guinea savanna, gallery forest, moist forest, mountain forest and grassland. Many rivers flow through the park, including the Taraba, a major tributary of the River Benue. A wide variety of animal life can be found, including buffalo, roan ante­lope, chimpanzee, colobus monkey, hippopotamus, hyena, giant forest hog, lion and leopard. Bird watching in Gashaka-Gumti is eye catching. The park has a diverse range of rare bird species. There is excellent fishing in River Kam.

Cross River National Park: Cross River NP is popular for its exclusive rain forest plant cover termed wealthiest by nature experts. With its tropical climate characterized by a rainy season between April and October and a dry season between November and April, this park comprises the last remaining rain forest in the country. It is a great habitant for wildlife such as huge concentrations of elephants, buffaloes, leopards and lowland gorillas as well as the white-faced monkey. The resultant dense plant cover makes the park a superb spot to see birds and butterflies breeding.

Lake Kainji National Park: This Park can be found in Kwara State and integrates the Borgu Game Reserve as well as the Zugurma Game Reserve in the southeast in Niger State. It contains the Kainji Dam, an artificial lake which covers the town of Old Bussa. Kainji National Park takes pride in numerous animal species which include the big five – a big sight for most tourists to Africa. Animals include antelopes, roan antelopes, jackals, baboons, hartebeest, monkeys and crocodiles. The 136 km long Kainji Dam Lake is managed by Nigeria Electric Power Authority and offers tours on request from the Power Authority. The park is usually open from December to June, with the best time to visit towards the end of the dry season, when the grass has dried out and the animals move closer to the water. Visitors are also allowed to fish on the lake. Its dazzling waters feature rampant bird life. The park accommodation offers 49 classy chalets for tourists.

Wikki Warm Springs: is one of the best features of the Yankari game reserves are located around the Gagi River. The springs offer a wonderful camping option after a hot day’s game-viewing to relax in the warm water and amazing gush out from under a cliff to an open area to over 600ft upwards.
