Nigeria National parks
Wildlife parks are among the principal attractions in Nigeria and visits to national parks are exceedingly enjoyable by the tourists. The country has five national parks and majority of them concentrate and take care on the well-being of Nigerian wildlife. The government works immensely in order to maintain the safety of wildlife in these national parks properly. These parks are essentially seen as wildlife reserves for the country. The African continent is famous worldwide for its dense forests and wildlife reserves, which are also the chief attractions for the tourists.
NATIONAL PARKS IN NIGERIA
Kainji National Park: This Park is located in the Kwara state and was established in 1979. The Kainji national park has two animal reserves Borgu.and Zurugama. Both the reserves cover a wide variety of animals in a big number. It covers a landscape of 5,299sq.kms. There is Kainji dam in this park, which is an additional attraction.
Yankari Game Reserve: This Park 225km east of Jos is Nigeria’s best national park for observing wildlife. The park still holds reasonable numbers of buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck and plenty of baboons. The biggest draw is the 500-strong population of elephant and it’s possible that lion may also survive. The bird-watching is excellent. The best time to see animals is from late December to late April, before the rains, when the thirsty animals congregate at the Gaji River. Yankari’s other attraction is the Wikki Warm Spring near the park camp site.
Gashaka-Gumti National Park: The biggest national park in Nigeria that covers the landscape of 6,000sq.kms. It includes the highest number of wild animals; some of them belong to the endangered species. The dense forests and rivers in the national park are excellent for fishing. There is forest reserves headquarter that keeps a strict watch on the poachers and also take care of the well-being of the animals. There is a rest house for visitors situated on the main road of Mambila plateau and Bali.
Cross river National Park: This Park is famous among the tourists in all around the world as it is among the few last rain forests of the world. The moist green vegetation cover creates an excellent place to see birds and butterflies.
The Park was created from two existing forest reserves of Bashi-Okwango and Oban Forest Reserves. This park contains the last remaining rain forest in Nigeria, which is being preserved with the help of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. It has a herd of forest elephants, the white-faced monkey (original to only Nigeria), wild buffaloes, leopards and lowland gorillas. A large number of tourists come to visit the park. The park has a tropical climate characterized by a rainy season between April and October and a dry season between November and April.
Okonni Wildlife Sanctuary: This Wildlife Sanctuary is jointly managed by the Edo State Government and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. It contains some of the widest rare species like the white-throated monkey, Mona monkey, the putty nosed quenon, the red-cangaby, chimpanzees, elephants, bush-baby, the potto buffalo, red river hog, duikers, horn bills and porcupines.
