Discovering Senegal

Senegal is a country south of the Sénégal River in western Africa. It bounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, in the North by Mauritania, in the East by Mali and in the South by Guinea-Bissau and Guinea. Its southern region of Casamance shares a border with the Republic of The Gambia. It owes its name to the river that borders it to the East and North and that originates from the Fouta Djallon in Guinea.

Senegal covers a land area of about 197,000 sq km and has an estimated population of about 14 million people. The country experiences a tropical climate with two seasons; the dry and rainy season. With well-defined dry and humid seasons that result from northeast winter winds and southwest summer winds. Dakar is the capital city and is located at the westernmost point of the country and African continent on the Cap-Vert peninsula. It is a fresh city of more than 1.5 million residents boasting striking modern buildings and historical colonial structures. It is a vibrant city evident with lively open-air markets, cafes, a fun filled night life and a wide range of city hotels. The Senegal’s landscape consists mainly of the rolling sandy plains of the western Sahel which rise to foothills in the southeast. Here is also found Senegal’s highest point, an otherwise unnamed feature near Nepen Diakha at 584m. The northern border is formed by the Sénégal River; other rivers include the Casamance and Gambia Rivers.
