Seychelles is four hours ahead of GMT and three hours ahead of Central European time.

Language:

Creole, English and French are the official languages used in Seychelles. However there are a minority of Seychellois who fluently speak Italian, Latin & German.

Domestic Flights:

There are domestic flights between Victoria, Mahe Island, Praslin Island and La Digue Island plus several other major Islands. These flights as well as the Catamaran traveling between Mahe and Praslin operate solitary during the day time. Chartered flights and helicopters also provide both daily and weekly shuttle services between Mahe and the other islands.

International Flights:

There are direct flights to Seychelles International Airport operated by the national airline, Air Seychelles on a weekly basis from South Africa (Johannesburg), U.K (London Gatwick), France (Paris), Italy (Milan & Rome), Kenya (Nairobi), Mauritius, Germany (Frankfurt), Singapore and Russia (Moscow). Other International Airlines to Seychelles include Air Austral, Meridiana, British Airways, Air France, Condor, Emirates, Euro fly, Kenya Airways and Qatar Airways.

Entry Regulations:

No VISA requirement is needed to travel to Seychelles.

Weather Tips:

Seychelles travelers should be aware of the general weather conditions at the time they intend to visit. Being in the tropics, and surrounded by the enormous Indian Ocean, Seychelles weather is pleasantly warm and humid all year round. Annual sunshine and rainfall are high, evidenced by the lush green vegetation on the main granite based islands. The exterior coralline Islands however experience a reduced annual rainfall.

Clothing / Health Tips:

Light clothing is a prerequisite since it is a tropical hot climate with humid atmosphere and plenty of sun. Swim wear are essential as Seychelles is bordered by water. Casual eveningwear (long trousers for men), with appropriate. Nudity is prohibited. Being in the tropics you may encounter scenarios that may require medical attentions. Carry some medicine with you.

Money / Banking:

Being a traveler you must be well conversant about Seychelles currency. The local currency is Seychelles Rupee (SR) which is divided into 100 cents. Coins are 1 and 5 SR plus 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents.  Paper notes are in SR10, SR25, SR50, SR100 and SR500 denominations. City of Victoria has many banks that operate foreign currency exchange transactions especially at the airport bank branches.

Traveler’s checks are also accepted by banks. Credit cards such as American Express, Visa and MasterCard are also acceptable in supermarkets, hotels, car hire operators, yacht charter and restaurants. The US dollars, EURO and British pounds are the more preferred major currencies much as less likely to gain additional exchange fees.

Seychelles Island situated in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and has a total land area is 456 sq km. The Seychelles consist of an archipelago of over 100 islands and the main islands are Mahé (142 sq km), La Digue (10 sq km) and Praslin (38 sq km). Victoria is the capital located in Mahé about 1600 km off the east coast of Africa. These three main islands are all out of granite, the others are coral atolls.

Aldabra, Farquhar, and Desroches groups are the other islands included in the territory of the republic. The principal languages spoken in Seychelles are English, French and Seselwa Creol.

History

The Seychelles were uninhabited when the British East India Company arrived on the archipelago in 1609. Thereafter, they became a favorite pirate haven. The French claimed the islands in 1756 and administered them as part of the colony of Mauritius. The British gained control of the islands through the Treaty of Paris (1814) and changed the islands’ name from the French Séchelles to the Anglicized Seychelles. The islands became self-governing in 1975 and independent on June 29, 1976. They have remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The first who visited the island were the Arabs. In 1505 the island appeared on the Portuguese charts, Mahé de Labourdonnais, who was been the French Governor of Mauritius Island, sent in 1742 an expedition to the Seychelles islands. The French took possession of Seychelles islands 1756. From this date until 1903 the Seychelles colony was a dependency of Mauritius, which passed from the French to the British in 1814. In August 1903 Seychelles became a separate British Crown colony.

Flora & Fauna

Seychelles is a living sanctuary for some of the rarest species of flora & fauna on earth. With almost 50% of its limited landmass set aside as national parks and reserves, Seychelles prides itself on its record for far sighted conservation policies that have resulted in an enviable degree of protection for the environment and the varied ecosystems it supports.

Nowhere else on earth will you find unique endemic specimens such as the fabulous Coco-de-mer, the largest seed in the world, the jellyfish tree, with only eight surviving examples, the Seychelles’ paradise flycatcher. From the smallest frog to the heaviest land tortoise and the only flightless bird of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles nurtures an amazing array of endemic species within surrounds of exceptional natural beauty. Large Seychelles fruit bats, the so-called flying fox, are often seen, their impressive 1m wingspan allowing surprising aerial skills and daytime flying displays.

More than 200 plant species have been identified in 16 different habitat zones and a number of endemic invertebrates and reptiles thrive on the island. Seychelles Blue Pigeons and Seychelles Sunbirds, rare or absent in 1997, are now relatively common and together with the Seychelles Kestrel, Seychelles Swiftlet and introduced Seychelles White-Eye comprise the five endemic bird species present. Emerging from the ocean to nest on North Island’s beaches in growing numbers are green and hawksbill turtles.

Culture

The cosmopolitan Seychellois are a colorful blend of peoples of different races, cultures and religions.  At different times in its history, people of African, European and Asian origin have come to Seychelles, bringing with them their distinct traditions and customs and contributing to the way of life and to the vibrant Seychellois culture.

One can see these influences at work throughout the domains of local art, cuisine, music, dance and architecture. The architectural design of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs are representative of a style adapted for comfortable living in the tropics that displays influences from Seychelles’ French and British colonial heritage. Modern architecture attempts to assimilate traditional styles with practical features designed to capture the island breezes.

Uninhabited until the arrival of French planters in the late 18th century, they remain sanctuaries for unique flora and fauna – the coco de mer palm, the insect eating pitcher plant, giant tortoises and flying foxes – and are a haven for holiday makers too.

The islands’ resort and hotels offer high standards of accommodation, facilities and services, yet have been considerately developed to ensure protection of the indigenous animals and birds, the colorful marine life, and the exceptional natural beauty of the forested, beaches and mountains.

The Seychelles, predominantly of Creole and European origin, display an easygoing friendliness. English and French are the official languages, but the vast majority speaks Creole, a local patois based on French. Seychellois food is even more eclectic, based on a blend of French, Indian and Chinese influence.

Because the Seychelles remained uninhabited for so long as a unique assembly of plants and animals developed on the tiny fragments of land. As a result, the islands are of immense of botanical and zoological interest and conservation is a high priory, with all development carefully regulated and controlled. Seychelles is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Aldabra, the world’s largest raised coral atoll and Praslin’s Vallee de Mai, once believed to be the Garden of Eden.

For visitors who can rear themselves away from the beaches and water sports, the Seychelles offers a wide variety of other things to see and do. There are great walk-on Mahe Island, where the interior has mountains rising to nearly 1,000metre, their slopes rich with tropical foliage; you can try your luck at the casino at Baeu Vallo; there is excellent shopping for handicrafts, curious and original art in dozens of little shops and galleries; or you can sample the tasty local cuisine in a typical Seychelles restaurant.

Add to all this, the warm, genuine hospitality of the people and it is easy to see why the Seychelles attract discerning visitors from around the world.
