They boast hundreds of snorkelling sights which are regarded as the best in the world. Whether you’re looking for your own little private stretch of sand or a sport adventure hang out during your holiday trip, Seychelles has a little paradise for you.
Cultural Tours
If you have a special passion for art and unique culture of the place, then take a tour to Mahe to visit some of its best art galleries and studios such as the George Camille Gallery, Andrew Gee Artist & Designer studio, and Antonio Filippin sculpture Studio. Also, a must-see attraction for art lovers is the Craft Village and Senpa craft kiosks that come with a spectrum of stunning craft items. Cultural and heritages tours can are also on offer by the Seychelles tour operators to the several museums and art galleries of the Islands; the prominent being National Museum of History, Seychelles National Archive, Seychelles Natural History Museum, Cafe des Art, and George Camille Art Gallery.
Significant spots include Morne Seychellois National Park, Aride Island Nature Reserve and Ste Anne Marine National Park. Walking trails flourish in these sanctuaries and entail gentle strolls and circuits that take 4 to 5 hours in the national parks. The drive up to Morne Seychellois National Park is inspirational in its’ scenic wonders and the walk is worth it for the stunning views out across the Indian Ocean and a birds-eye view of those renowned beaches. Here visitors are guaranteed to spot the indigenous giant tortoise on the walk. Some of the best Seychelles birding destinations are the small, granitic islands of Aride and Curieuse, which are easy to reach from both Mahe and Praslin. Both of these islands are nature reserves, and there are no overnight accommodations on them, but that doesn’t mean you can visit them on day trips.

Seychelles has great pride in its unique and amazing nature and goes effort beyond to protect and preserve it. Today it’s known for success stories in protecting its flora and fauna.

Much of the Seychelles beauty lies in its natural wildlife. This makes the islands a sanctuary for many rare and unique plants and birds.

There are 81 unique species of plant life, which can only be found just within Seychelles and a further 25 or so species in the Aldabra group. Particularly well-known is the Coco de mer, a species of palm that grows only on the islands of Praslin and neighboring Curieuse.

Back in history, like many fragile island ecosystems, Seychelles experienced massive loss of biodiversity during early stages human survival, which included destruction of most of the giant tortoises from these granitic islands, felling of coastal and mid-level forests as well as extinction of rare species such as the Seychelles Parakeet, the chestnut flanked white eye, the saltwater crocodile and the Black Terrapin.

However several measures of nature reserves and far sighted conservation policies have been instituted to protect the environment to an enviable degree plus the varied ecosystems it supports.

Seychelles has almost 50% of its limited landmass established with national parks and reserves such as very common Praslin’s Vallée de Mai, once assumed to be the original site of the Garden of Eden.

The Islands host some of the largest seabird colonies. There are several unique varieties of Orchids on the Islands. The rare Seychelles Black Parrot the national treasure bird of the country being most protected.

The Aldabra population is the largest in the world. These unique reptiles can be found even in captive herds. It has been reported that the granitic islands of Seychelles supported distinct species of Seychelles giant tortoises.

The marine life around the islands, especially the more remote coral islands, can be spectacular. More than 1,000 species of fish have been recorded. Since the use of spear guns and dynamite for fishing was banned through efforts of local conservationists in the 1960s, the wildlife is unafraid of snorkelers and divers.

Nowhere else on earth will you find unique endemic specimens like the amazing Coco-de-mer; the largest seed in the world, the jellyfish tree- with only eight surviving examples, the Seychelles’ paradise flycatcher and Seychelles warbler which are still prevalent on the Island.

From the smallest frog to the heaviest land tortoise and the only flightless bird of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles nurtures an amazing array of endemic species within surrounds of exceptional natural beauty.

Seychelles is regarded as an all year round travelers’ welcome destination. However travelers and tourists should be aware of the general weather conditions at the time they propose to visit.

In general, Seychelles being in the tropics and surrounded by the gigantic Indian Ocean, it has a warm and humid weather averaging 29°C throughout the year. The tropical sun is very strong and even on overcast days that one should take great attention to cover-up and use high factor suntan protection. A hat and sunglasses are recommended.

Being tropical islands near to the equator, Seychelles also experiences heavy rainfall which peaks around November to end of January. The flourishing green vegetation along the outer coralline island areas is evidence to this. The outer coralline islands however have a lower annual rainfall.

Since the islands are blessed with a year-long warm, tropical climate, it appropriate for a Seychelles Travel, although different times of year may be better suited to your specific interests. Hereby, we advise the following safari travel activities for you under particular weather conditions:

Bird Watching: All year round for your indigenous species, June to October is best for the sea bird colonies.

Sailing and Windsurfing: Late May to October, generally force 3 to 6, steady winds, both night and day. The Seychelles Sailing Cup, an international sailing event, is held in January.

Walking Safaris: Ideally choose the time of lowest humidity and cooling breezes – June to October present the most appropriate, although any period of the year is credible.

Local fishing: This goes on throughout the year

Conditions for swimming, snorkeling and especially diving are superb during April to May and late September to early December when the water temperature sometimes reaches 29ºC and visibility is often 30m plus.

The Islands are also washed by Trade Winds. The South East Trade Winds are prevalent from May to September when it will be drier, breezier, and slightly cooler than during the rest of the year. In this case, beaches located in the north west of any island tend to have calm waters and vice versa for the North West trade winds.

The North West Trade Winds prevail from October to April. This is a calmer breeze which results in augmented humidity and much more calm seas. Higher rainfall occurs during this time of year.

Seychelles Island situated in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and has a total land area is 456 sq km. The Seychelles consist of an archipelago of over 100 islands and the main islands are Mahé (142 sq km), La Digue (10 sq km) and Praslin (38 sq km). Victoria is the capital located in Mahé about 1600 km off the east coast of Africa. These three main islands are all out of granite, the others are coral atolls.

Aldabra, Farquhar, and Desroches groups are the other islands included in the territory of the republic. The principal languages spoken in Seychelles are English, French and Seselwa Creol.

History

The Seychelles were uninhabited when the British East India Company arrived on the archipelago in 1609. Thereafter, they became a favorite pirate haven. The French claimed the islands in 1756 and administered them as part of the colony of Mauritius. The British gained control of the islands through the Treaty of Paris (1814) and changed the islands’ name from the French Séchelles to the Anglicized Seychelles. The islands became self-governing in 1975 and independent on June 29, 1976. They have remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The first who visited the island were the Arabs. In 1505 the island appeared on the Portuguese charts, Mahé de Labourdonnais, who was been the French Governor of Mauritius Island, sent in 1742 an expedition to the Seychelles islands. The French took possession of Seychelles islands 1756. From this date until 1903 the Seychelles colony was a dependency of Mauritius, which passed from the French to the British in 1814. In August 1903 Seychelles became a separate British Crown colony.

Flora & Fauna

Seychelles is a living sanctuary for some of the rarest species of flora & fauna on earth. With almost 50% of its limited landmass set aside as national parks and reserves, Seychelles prides itself on its record for far sighted conservation policies that have resulted in an enviable degree of protection for the environment and the varied ecosystems it supports.

Nowhere else on earth will you find unique endemic specimens such as the fabulous Coco-de-mer, the largest seed in the world, the jellyfish tree, with only eight surviving examples, the Seychelles’ paradise flycatcher. From the smallest frog to the heaviest land tortoise and the only flightless bird of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles nurtures an amazing array of endemic species within surrounds of exceptional natural beauty. Large Seychelles fruit bats, the so-called flying fox, are often seen, their impressive 1m wingspan allowing surprising aerial skills and daytime flying displays.

More than 200 plant species have been identified in 16 different habitat zones and a number of endemic invertebrates and reptiles thrive on the island. Seychelles Blue Pigeons and Seychelles Sunbirds, rare or absent in 1997, are now relatively common and together with the Seychelles Kestrel, Seychelles Swiftlet and introduced Seychelles White-Eye comprise the five endemic bird species present. Emerging from the ocean to nest on North Island’s beaches in growing numbers are green and hawksbill turtles.

Culture

The cosmopolitan Seychellois are a colorful blend of peoples of different races, cultures and religions. At different times in its history, people of African, European and Asian origin have come to Seychelles, bringing with them their distinct traditions and customs and contributing to the way of life and to the vibrant Seychellois culture.

One can see these influences at work throughout the domains of local art, cuisine, music, dance and architecture. The architectural design of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs are representative of a style adapted for comfortable living in the tropics that displays influences from Seychelles’ French and British colonial heritage. Modern architecture attempts to assimilate traditional styles with practical features designed to capture the island breezes.

The Seychelles, 115 outstandingly beautiful granite and coral islands fringed by sparkling white sandy beaches and encircled by coral reefs teeming with fish, lies in the Indian Ocean a few degrees south of the Equator. The archipelago comprises the main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue; the inner, granitic resort islands, including Sainte Anna, North, Fregate, Denis, Bird and Anonyme; and the outer corals islands, of which Desroches is on of the most popular.

Uninhabited until the arrival of French planters in the late 18th century, they remain sanctuaries for unique flora and fauna – the coco de mer palm, the insect eating pitcher plant, giant tortoises and flying foxes – and are a haven for holiday makers too.

The islands’ resort and hotels offer high standards of accommodation, facilities and services, yet have been considerately developed to ensure protection of the indigenous animals and birds, the colorful marine life, and the exceptional natural beauty of the forested, beaches and mountains.

The Seychelles, predominantly of Creole and European origin, display an easygoing friendliness. English and French are the official languages, but the vast majority speaks Creole, a local patois based on French. Seychellois food is even more eclectic, based on a blend of French, Indian and Chinese influence.

Because the Seychelles remained uninhabited for so long as a unique assembly of plants and animals developed on the tiny fragments of land. As a result, the islands are of immense of botanical and zoological interest and conservation is a high priory, with all development carefully regulated and controlled. Seychelles is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Aldabra, the world’s largest raised coral atoll and Praslin’s Vallee de Mai, once believed to be the Garden of Eden.

For visitors who can rear themselves away from the beaches and water sports, the Seychelles offers a wide variety of other things to see and do. There are great walk-on Mahe Island, where the interior has mountains rising to nearly 1,000metre, their slopes rich with tropical foliage; you can try your luck at the casino at Baeu Vallo; there is excellent shopping for handicrafts, curious and original art in dozens of little shops and galleries; or you can sample the tasty local cuisine in a typical Seychelles restaurant.

Add to all this, the warm, genuine hospitality of the people and it is easy to see why the Seychelles attract discerning visitors from around the world.

Seychelles is renowned for the careful conservation of the environment and the beauty of its national perks. Explore Seychelles on one of the fantastic island hopping tours that cover a combination of inner and outer islands, or on one of our catamaran cruises that visit many of the inner islands.

You should have less accommodation worries. The islands’ wide range of resorts offers everything from sophisticated luxury and romantic getaways, to good family accommodation with lots of activities. Sainte Anne and Fregate Islands each have just one resort.

Family Tours

Local crafts, curios and beach wear are available in the gift shops of most resorts. Some resorts offer activities catering to children aged four years and above. Children and adults will be fascinated by the giant tortoises that have lived for hundreds of years on these paradise islands. Attractive walking trails are found on most islands and the magnificent beaches make idyllic picnic spots.

Water sports – snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, deep sea fishing and boat cruising; golf, trekking and bird watching are all present. The Islands are also perfect for a honeymoon – and are ideal for any romantic couple.
