Situated in a malaria free area close to Port Elizabeth, in the dense Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Addo Elephant National Park is an elephant sanctuary that currently houses more than 450 elephants. This world famous Elephant Park covering about164, 000 hectares near the Indian Ocean Coast was proclaimed in 1931 and has been expanded to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve.
Vegetation
Several species of rare and endemic plants, especially the succulent shrubs and geophytes are dominant.
Wildlife
South Africa’s Addo Elephant National Park has the largest concentration of elephants of any park worldwide, as well as the other ‘Big Five’ (lions, black rhinoceros, leopards, and Cape buffalos). Visitors who undertake a marine tour might catch a glimpse of a large variety of other marine life such as the southern right whale and the great white shark in the Indian Ocean. Also present in the Park are various antelope species, warthogs and the flightless dungbeetle.

Bird Life
Addo is an equally excellent habitat for bird watching. The available Bird Island is a great breeding habitat for gannets and penguins. The Bird Island hosts about 120,000 birds.

Accommodations within the Park ranges from luxury five star lodges, basic tented camps to backpacker facilities. Options are RiverBend Lodge Guest House, Elephant House, Nguni River Lodge, Addo Elephant Safari Lodge, Kuzuko Lodge, Long Hope Villa @ River Bend, Kronenhoff Guest House, Darlington Lake Lodge and Gorah Elephant Camp.

Getting There
Move along the highway towards Grahamstown; you will come across a signpost Motherwell and Addo Elephant National Park where you turn to the left. You continue on your left once you get at the top of the off-ramp; proceed on this route where you will get to the entrance of the Park.
