Table Mountain National Park

Welcome to Table Mountain National Park and Natural World Heritage Site.

Established on May 29 1998, the incredibly scenic Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) is a wildlife park in Cape Town, South Africa. It is positioned at the extreme south-western tip of Africa and covers approximately three quarters of the peninsula stretching from flat-topped Table Mountain to Cape Point.
Currently it covers 25 000 hectares of the conservation land area; and unlike other South African Parks, TMNP is surrounded wholly by a thriving and cosmopolitan Cape Town city. Nowhere else in the world does an area of such spectacular beauty and such rich bio-diversity exist within a metropolitan area.
The park stretches from Cape Point to Signal Hill, and includes Devil’s Peak, Lion’s Head, the Silvermine Nature Reserve, Boulders Beach, Tokai, and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
Previously known as the Cape Peninsula National Park, the main purpose for its proclamation was to protect the natural environment of the Table Mountain Chain, and in particular the rare fynbos vegetation. The park is managed by South African National Parks.

Table Mountain
The park is home to countless jaw-dropping views including the majestic Table Mountain, one of the oldest mountain and Cape Town’s most iconic feature. This is the main attraction of Table Mountain National Park. This dramatic landmark draws millions of visitors over the years. Tourists who are looking for something a little more rugged than a cable car ride will find that Table Mountain has hundreds of hiking trails. The more adventurous and physically fit hikers often take advantage of over 300 trekking routes that

Wildlife

Table Mountain National Park is renowned for its extraordinarily diverse and unique fauna and flora – with rugged cliffs, steep slopes and sandy flats. In the park are amazing numbers of antelopes, Cape mountain zebras, dassies and the rare Table Mountain ghost frog. You will also likely see baboons. Obey the park rules, and do not feed them as Baboons are not known for good manners, and could spoil an otherwise wonderful visit to Table Mountain National Park. Smaller mammals are found in the park: caracal, rock hyrax and a variety of small antelope species, such as the Cape Grysbok and notably the recently re-introduced klipspringer. Many residents who live in communities neighbouring the park, such as Da Gama Park, Tokai and Scarborough, often clash with baboons which raid their farms and houses for food.
Larger predators including the Cape Lion, leopard, spotted hyena as well as the black-backed jackal were popular in the park in as late as 1920s, but have since disappeared.
The Park is home to approximately 8,200 plant species, several of which grow naturally nowhere else in the world. In the park are the rare king protea (the national floral emblem), Ericas and restios.
Cape Point
and the Cape of Good Hope
These are very scenic, although they are neither the southernmost tip of Africa nor the meeting-place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as is often believed.
