Nakasero Market
This is located in the city centre and this where you get quality fresh foodstuffs. The parking there is tricky and the market it is prone to thugs. It opens daily, from 5: 00am until about 8:00pm.
Balikuddembe Market
Like Nakasero market, Balikudembe is a downtown shopping centre that deals in almost all local foodstuffs, and used (second-hand) goods. This is the biggest market in the East African region and harbours over 55,000 people.
Nakulabye Market
Kibuye Market
Masaka Town Market
Nyendo Market
TIPS ON PAYMENT
Large shops accept credit cards, especially in the touristy part of the town, big supermarkets and safari lodges. In small shops and markets you have to pay in cash, ensure you have the local currency in smaller denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10, 000 for quicker and safer transactions.
TIPS FOR SHOPPING IN UGANDA
Shopping in Uganda is generally easy, fun and exceptionally rewarding, but the following tips are useful especially when you are a first time traveler to the East African country.
1. Fixed prices are the norm in most Super markets, department stores and a number of shops in Kampala, but at most other places bargaining is acceptable and expected.
2. Shop around to compare prices – this is especially important with durables such as Electronic Appliances.
3. Obtain a receipt for goods bought and check if it is correct and the amount matches what you have paid leaving the shop.
4. Do not let a stranger or an unfamiliar person to you to take you shopping.
5. Bear in mind that the price difference especially reflects on the quality of the product. It is paramount that you consider the more priced which is most times value-worth.
6. It is also important to take note that shops in hotel arcades pay high rents and accordingly prices tend to be higher than at street shops. So expect higher prices here.
Inclusion, Uganda has a number of other places to shop. Most shopping centres are second to none, and whether its clothes, computers, gems or mobile phones that you are looking for, visitors marvel at the range and quality of what’s on offer. If shopping is your thing, a visit to Uganda will very likely satisfy your passion.

Ngamba Island Sanctuary

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Full and Half day Tours with Expert-Guided Adventures; Ngamba Island Activities, Bio-diversity, Ngamba Island Safaris, Where to Stay – Ngamba Island Tented Camp
Ngamba Island is a chimpanzee sanctuary that was established and officially opened to visitors in October 1998. Its establishment was to take care for the 19 orphaned chimpanzees that had been rescued from poachers by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
It is nestled approximately 23km from Entebbe Town, in close proximity to the equator Central Uganda. Ngamba Island stretched over 40 hectares of rainforest which makes it a perfect habitat for even other wildlife species.
The island forms part of the Kome Archipelago, a group of over 12 islands and islets separated from the northern shore of Lake Victoria by the 10km the open flowing Damba channel. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary currently shelters close to 50 orphaned chimpanzees; and it’s managed by Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Trust (UWECT); International Fund for Animal Welfare (US); Born Free Foundation (Britain); the Jane Goodall Institute (Germany); and the Zoological Board of New South Wales (Australia).
Bio-diversity
This fragile forested island on Lake Victoria supports a rich diversity of natural foods and wildlife. The sanctuary in principle was set up to provide the best facilities and care to the captive chimpanzees. Several of these primates come from unfamiliar situations often rescued from poachers who have killed the parents for “bush meat” and taken the infant chimps to sell in the illegal exotic pet trade. Young chimps are introduced to the sanctuary in cages and slowly introduced to surrogate mothers.
The Island is also an ideal natural habitat for several other species including Otters, Fruit Bats, Hippos, Crocodiles and Monitor Lizards. Over 154 rare species of birds have been recorded at the sanctuary such as the Orange Weaver Bird, Pied Crow, Great Egret, etc. With more than 50 plant species, Ngamba Island provides a variety of natural foods for the chimpanzees.
Getting There
The most popular and cheap way to get to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is either by a speedboat which takes about 45 minutes ride (23km offshore from Entebbe). A traditional canoe can also be used although make the journey longer and exhaustive.
Best Month to Visit Ngamba Island
