Dolphin Safaris in Zanzibar

Dolphins in Zanzibar Archipelago, Menai Bay Conservation Area, Kizimkazi Fishing Village; Best Period for Dolphin Safaris
For most visitors to Zanzibar Archipelago, it is about the sea, the corals, and the dolphins. Zanzibar is not really about the island itself. Although the Island has a lot to offer with the spice trade, a long rich history and natural forests with unique flora and fauna, it is much popular for water activities.
Dolphins on the Zanzibar Island have become an important source of local and foreign revenue for the local population on the Archipelago.
Dolphin safaris
make a big part of Zanzibar’s tourist activity and had put this East African Indian Ocean archipelago among competitive destination for beach and marine tourism. Over 115,000 tourists visit the archipelago each year with a purpose of visiting its rich marine resources and enjoying the warm, soft sand tropical beaches.

SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS IN ZANZIBAR

Menai Bay Conservation Area
Officially established as a conservation area in August 1997, Menai Bay Conservation Area (MBCA) is an archipelago of islands and sandbanks situated on Menai Bay, Zanzibar. At 470 sq km, it is the archipelago’s largest marine protected area. The conservation area which also doubles as a tropical paradise dream honeymoon boasts several beautiful beaches and unspoiled reefs with a palm fringed coastline that looks out over the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Menai Bay Conservation Area hosts two species of dolphins namely the bottlenose dolphins (most common), and the Indo-Pacific humpback species. Swimming with the dolphins is the most popular holiday activity here. To be able to swim with the dolphins we recommend early mornings. In the morning, you will have a good chance to swim with the dolphins.

Kizimkazi Fishing Village
Situated on the far Southern tip of Unguja Island of Zanzibar is Kizimkazi fishing village, a popular spot for viewing and swimming with dolphins. It is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which makes it another popular place to ‘swim with dolphins’. For maximum swimming enjoyment, travellers are urged to reach here early in the morning at 6am. After that, the area gets crowded and you will see many boats and numerous swimmers struggling to come close to these amazing creatures. Swimming with dolphins is incredibly exciting.

There are available accommodation options at the site including Kizimkazi Coral Reef Village Hotel, Dolphin Beach Resort Hotel, and Swahili Beach Resort Hotel. For dolphin swimming, Zanzibar holidays can be a wonderful experience.

Weather & Climate / When To Go

The Island of Zanzibar features ideal holiday weather for most part of the year. Just south of the equator, Zanzibar’s weather pattern is relatively similar to that of Tanzania– although always tends to be a little more humid with occasional rains in the dry season.
Rain / Wet Season

Short rains can occur in November but are characterized by short showers which do not last long.  The long rains also referred to as the ‘Green Season’ normally occur in early April to mid May.
April and May are the monsoon months and the wettest, with up to 15 inches of rain per month, and many hotels close until mid-June. Afternoon tropical downpours are the norm – which can be heavy on any of the islands. November to late December is another season short rains on the Islands. Much as these is much lighter than the main rains and less reliable.

Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar
Dry Season

Zanzibar’s long dry periods from mid-June to October, when rainfall has relatively subsided. The Island is blessed with an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily.
Humidity

Humidity in Zanzibar is relatively low between mid-December and February punctuated with some refreshing breezes. It is highest from March to May Zanzibar is hot.
Monsoon Season
April to June is monsoon season in Zanzibar and up and down the coast is battered with pelting rain. Same as July to October the rain doesn’t last all day and there is still a lot of time in the day where the sun shines. Quite a number of Zanzibar Vacation Resorts and Beach Hotels close. The ones that do stay open offer amazingly discounted rates.
When To Go

November to March are peak travel months in Zanzibar as the weather is hot and very humid and there is very little rain. Temperatures moderately vary with altitude and location, the sun is bearable and for the most of the day, the sky is clear. However all in all, Zanzibar being an island, its weather can be unpredictable.
