For most visitors to Zanzibar Archipelago, it is about the sea, the corals, and the dolphins. Zanzibar is not really about the island itself. Although the Island has a lot to offer with the spice trade, a long rich history and natural forests with unique flora and fauna, it is much popular for water activities.
Dolphins on the Zanzibar Island have become an important source of local and foreign revenue for the local population on the Archipelago.
Dolphin safaris make a big part of Zanzibar’s tourist activity and had put this East African Indian Ocean archipelago among competitive destination for beach and marine tourism. Over 115,000 tourists visit the archipelago each year with a purpose of visiting its rich marine resources and enjoying the warm, soft sand tropical beaches.

Menai Bay Conservation Area
Officially established as a conservation area in August 1997, Menai Bay Conservation Area (MBCA) is an archipelago of islands and sandbanks situated on Menai Bay, Zanzibar. At 470 sq km, it is the archipelago’s largest marine protected area. The conservation area which also doubles as a tropical paradise dream honeymoon boasts several beautiful beaches and unspoiled reefs with a palm fringed coastline that looks out over the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Menai Bay Conservation Area hosts two species of dolphins namely the bottlenose dolphins (most common), and the Indo-Pacific humpback species. Swimming with the dolphins is the most popular holiday activity here. To be able to swim with the dolphins we recommend early mornings. In the morning, you will have a good chance to swim with the dolphins.

Kizimkazi Fishing Village
Situated on the far Southern tip of Unguja Island of Zanzibar is Kizimkazi fishing village, a popular spot for viewing and swimming with dolphins. It is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which makes it another popular place to ‘swim with dolphins’. For maximum swimming enjoyment, travellers are urged to reach here early in the morning at 6am. After that, the area gets crowded and you will see many boats and numerous swimmers struggling to come close to these amazing creatures. Swimming with dolphins is incredibly exciting.

There are available accommodation options at the site including Kizimkazi Coral Reef Village Hotel, Dolphin Beach Resort Hotel, and Swahili Beach Resort Hotel. For dolphin swimming, Zanzibar holidays can be a wonderful experience.

The Island of Zanzibar features ideal holiday weather for most part of the year. Just south of the equator, Zanzibar’s weather pattern is relatively similar to that of Tanzania– although always tends to be a little more humid with occasional rains in the dry season.
Rain / Wet Season
Short rains can occur in November but are characterized by short showers which do not last long. The long rains also referred to as the ‘Green Season’ normally occur in early April to mid May.
April and May are the monsoon months and the wettest, with up to 15 inches of rain per month, and many hotels close until mid-June. Afternoon tropical downpours are the norm – which can be heavy on any of the islands. November to late December is another season short rains on the Islands. Much as these is much lighter than the main rains and less reliable.

Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar
Dry Season
Zanzibar’s long dry periods from mid-June to October, when rainfall has relatively subsided. The Island is blessed with an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily.
Humidity
Humidity in Zanzibar is relatively low between mid-December and February punctuated with some refreshing breezes. It is highest from March to May Zanzibar is hot.
Monsoon Season
April to June is monsoon season in Zanzibar and up and down the coast is battered with pelting rain. Same as July to October the rain doesn’t last all day and there is still a lot of time in the day where the sun shines. Quite a number of Zanzibar Vacation Resorts and Beach Hotels close. The ones that do stay open offer amazingly discounted rates.
When To Go
November to March are peak travel months in Zanzibar as the weather is hot and very humid and there is very little rain. Temperatures moderately vary with altitude and location, the sun is bearable and for the most of the day, the sky is clear. However all in all, Zanzibar being an island, its weather can be unpredictable.

Zanzibar has some fantastic locations for honeymoon and they vary. Some honeymoon travelers prefer a destination where they can experience true privacy and quiet relaxation, whereas others prefer a livelier scene with bars, night clubs and restaurants nearby. This real hidden gem just off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is every bit vibrant and exotic as it is secluded and romantic. Several honeymoon Tours to Zanzibar focus on the inherent romance of the Zanzibar natural ambience and take you to handpicked spots where new love is enjoyed in its supreme power. When booking your Zanzibar honeymoon destination, make sure to check its serenity and packages. Popular destinations such as Kendwa and Paje are very lively (and can be noisy as a result) but it’s great for lovers looking for a bit of a party.

It is situated in the Central East region and is habitat to the rare Red Colobus Monkey which is only endemic to Jozani Forest. Any honeymoon tour to this forest makes the trip more adventurous and memorable.
Stone Town Tours: Stone Town is the main historical centre of the island and it is well worth staying here even if it is just for a night or two at the beginning of your honeymoon. Even the architecture itself, ranging from huge white buildings, to large grey stone cathedrals, ornately-carved wooden doors and curving Arabic plasterwork, is at once beautiful, fascinating and romantic.
The most interesting is swimming close to the Dolphins. Because its most cases they are social, it si also possible to play with them.

Stone Town Tours
This tour takes you through legendary Stone Town, where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum, Dr Livingstone’s House, the Arab Fort, Anglican Cathedral, Hamamni Persian Baths, Peace Memorial Museum, amongst others. If you are a nature lover and interested in culture, there are vibrant cultural events in Stone Town. A tour to the site of Sultan Barghash’s harem at Marahubi should be another rewarding trip. Stone Town has some excellent gifts shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from.
Prison Island Tour
The ‘Prison Island’ is the most celebrated site of the offshore islands. This island was once owned by an Arab who used it for rebellious slaves. Later it was sold to general Mathews who converted it into a prison. One of the best attractions on the Island is the giant tortoises suspected to have been introduced from Aldabra, an Atoll off the Seychelles. Also present is the Jozani forest a relatively small National Park said to host the only remaining rare endemic Red Colobus Monkeys. There is a tiny beach which disappears at high tide, but with spectacular coral reefs. The island itself is well-forested, nice for a walk, an ideal place for a day trip.
North Coast Tour
The North Coast Tour is a leisure drive through the country side with choices of beaches in the Villages of Pongwe, Matemwe, Kiwengwa and Uroa. Activities on this tour include sunbathing, walks down the beach, swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing and relaxing. The tour does not have to follow any strict plan, but is decided on your choice. You could opt to hire a boat and explore the shore line from the sea if you wish.
Jozani Forest Reserve
The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar Island and is home to the endemic rare Red Colobus Monkey. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve’s perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Other species present include the Skye’s monkeys, small buck and bush pigs. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.
Spice Plantation Tour
Zanzibar is known as the spice Island of the Indian Ocean, and a visit to one of the spice plantations is a journey into the history & culture of the Island. Much has changed since the peak of the spice trade, but the spice industry, that was established in the old days, when Dhows carried the spices on the trade routes, is still an important industry of this island today. Tours to the spice plantations get tourist a fantastic opportunity to see and taste the several varieties of spices and fruits such as Cardamom, vanilla, lemon grass, pepper, cloves, cinnamon, chilli, oregano, ginger, tamarind, etc.
Kizimkazi Dolphin Tour
The most popular dolphin spotting location in Zanzibar is Kizimkazi. The site is a great spot for bottlenose and humpback dolphins. Kizimkazi village is located in the far south of Zanzibar Island and is a favourite hangout for dolphins that come here to feed, nurse their calves and refresh. Several bottlenose pods can be found here throughout the year. Although dolphin-spotting is a popular activity, sightings aren’t guaranteed and actually managing to swim with dolphins is a rare occurrence. Local tour operators at Kizimkazi usually organise boat excursions with local fishermen at guesthouses and lodges. A dolphin tour last 2-3 hours and the period between October and February presents the best time to see these extraordinary mammals.

There are quite a number of picturesque locations and destinations in Zanzibar where you will love to spend your Zanzibar holiday with your family or friends. The island is one of the largest coral islands off the east coast of Africa and is blessed with some of the world’s most stunning beaches. The dazzling wildlife parks & sanctuaries, eye-catching forts & palaces, astounding diversity which can be seen its culture and geography, enchanting waters and many other nature creations all are wonders of Zanzibar.

Guide for Africa.com offers a quick guide to most scenic and interesting things for your holidays in Zanzibar.

Historical Stone Town: The oldest part of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a world Heritage site, comprising of ancient buildings made out of clay, corral stone and lime. It is a fine blend of Arabic, African and Indian past. The Stone town was built by Arab and Indian merchants in coral stone in the early 1800s. It is characterized by the dilapidated architecture, mosques, bathhouse, old fort, interior courtyards, markets and the remnants of the Omani Arab and Persian ages. The most popular attractions here are Sultan’s palace and the ruins of the old slave market. Zanzibar tours to the Stone Town are interesting cultural experiences.

Sub-tropical beaches: Zanzibar’s beaches are celebrated for their magnificent white sand and warm azure waters. The islands are bordered by coral reefs full of marine like. This combined with excellent visibility makes the Island one of the most popular destinations for scuba diving and snorkelling. Some of the most involving experiences to most Zanzibar travellers are the Zanzibar beach holidays.

Marine wildlife: For those looking for sharks, Zanzibar is fantasy, as the coral reefs offer numerous spots for many species including reef sharks, tiger and lemon sharks, white sharks hammerheads and the elusive whale shark. To see marine wildlife in its natural habitat, consisting of coral reefs and vibrant, bright fish you may want to participate in some snorkelling or even book into a diving trip to see even more of the magnificently colourful underwater world. There is also chance to observe dolphins and turtles.

Zanzibar Cultural Festival: This cultural festival is held between July and August every year and is marked with taarab traditional music and dance and display of arts and crafts. It also includes street carnivals, canoe races, bull fighting and fairs. The festival participants come from far and near countries including Germany and China.

International Film Festival: Staged in the first week of July, this festival celebrates the culture of the “Dhow Countries”. It draws countries from Africa (dominantly), the Gulf States, India, Pakistan, Iran and the Indian Ocean. The beam of the event is the screening of competition and non-competition events. Several other activities include live dance and music performances and exhibitions on the culture of the Dhow countries.

Paje Holiday Village: Lying on the south eastern coast of Zanzibar between the villages of Jambiani and Bwejuu is Paje, one of the most pristine and desolated tropical beaches on the Zanzibar Island. It boasts amazing stretches of gorgeous white sand beach perfect for honeymoon in Zanzibar.

Nungwi Beach: This is nestled on the northernmost peninsula of Zanzibar Island. It is a small area north of Zanzibar only an hour’s drive from Stone Town. It is traditionally the centre of Zanzibar’s dhow-constructing industry. It offers a serene spot to relax from on holiday to Zanzibar.

Ideal Time for Zanzibar Holidays
As Zanzibar is situated in the tropics, it is subject to extreme weather. The season between July and October when average temperature lingers around 25°C and rains are moderate, presents the most ideal time of year for Holidays in Zanzibar.

Bawe Island; – Bawe Island lies south of Prison Island and has highly ranking snorkeling spots in the archipelago. Bawe, a not so popularly visited is a 30-minute boat ride.
In 1870, the island was used to anchor the first telegraph cables to Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. The snorkeling is excellent and so is the beach at all times of the tide. There’s not much to do on the island but sit on the beach but there are some trees that provide shade allowing fair-skinned people to make a whole day of it plus some sun bathing. Vacation facilities on the island are limited although there is one majestic luxury hotel. It is advisable to carry your food and beverages when traveling to Bawe.

Chumbe Island; – Chumbe Island, also known as Chumbe Island Coral Park is a private island. In Tanzania, it has the first ever Marine National Park plus a Nature reserve and it takes pride in a variety of vegetation as well as local birds. Because of the reserve, nature trails have been set up on the island as well as an educational facility. Several steps have been taken to preserve it; there are permanent moorings for boats landing at Chumbe and this prevents the need to drop anchor and kill coral. Only specific travel operators are permitted to moor at Chumbe. This is in attempt to guard the reef from damage by keep irresponsible boaters. It’s also why only CHICOP approved boat pilots are allowed to anchor there. This is why the Island is relatively expensive to visit. Unlike at Bawe, Chumbe has a lighthouse that is scheduled to be turned into a surveillance point; there is an old mosque that was built in an Indian architecture quite unique to other Islands; there’s a restaurant with a dinner charge inclusive of boat transport.

Grave Island;- This is a long and thin island just next to Snake Island in the north; This Island derives its name from the several graves on it largely belonging to the Britons who suffered casualties while fighting against Arab slaving ships. Several other graves housing the remains of the First World War fights are also located here. Aside from the graves, it has a nice beach although its waters are not suitable for swimming; available is a guesthouse plus a restaurant but partially operating. Travelers are encouraged to carry their own food and drinks. It’s a short boat ride from town

Prison Island; – This is the most fashionable island for travelers seeking an island pleasure holiday trip. It has a small beach that at times crowds at high tide and offers incredible snorkeling. It is a short time boat ride with a small trail that circles it. Visit the old prison and watch out for giant tortoises and peacocks in the ruins’ courtyard. You also get to see a giant natural lagoon that becomes beautiful when the tide is right. This Island was so prominent for slavery however after its abolition, it was inhabited by a British General who was later used it as a quarantine station. A prison was built after the General’s departure but it was never used for its intended purpose, instead housing quarantined visitors to Zanzibar. There’s a restaurant in the large house plus a smaller building that acts as a cottage. The island’s main attraction is the large land tortoises that roam around the big house. Peacocks are also renowned inhabitants of the island. Prison offers a great holiday destination.

Sandbar Island; -This is an island located south of Prison and is visible only at low tide. It’s a wonderful spot for snorkeling and sunbathing. It’s a popular destination for moon camping because of the great view of sunset and moonrise. Boats can be arranged near the Big Tree and they leave at about 6:00 p.m. and come back when you’re ready. People bring their own food and drinks. This Island gets a special appearance at sunrise due to redness from the horizon like being under a natural floodlight; and similarly as it sets it’s very dark on the island and you can’t see much but once the moon comes up it looks beautiful too. It’s also good for day picnics and diving. Its biggest hindrance is the equatorial sun heat.

Snake Island; -This small Island lies between Prison and Grave Islands and has no beach hence less frequently visited.

Introduction

Pemba Island lies 80 km north of its neighboring island, Unguja and east of the Tanzania’s city of Tanga. Prominent for its distinct witchcraft and the African occult, Pemba is often visited by people in search for local cures or looking to learn operating witch-doctoring. It is said that people travel from as far as Costa Rica to study the origins of voodoo. Although its reputation for occult healing and spell casting spreads much farther than Pemba, the locals will deny it emphatically if asked. The island in its beauty is quite bewitching enough. The epitome of a tropical paradise, Pemba has green valleys with rice paddies and palm trees and clove plantations that shade the roads. Vistas of the Indian Ocean are pleasant surprises as they are presented through the peaks and depths of Pemba’s hilly terrain.

History

Pemba Island has a very long history much as it’s not as eventful as that of Unguja since it has never been the centre of any ruling empire. Except for the cruelty of Mkama Ndume, who was the local ruler with his headquartering at Pujini, Pemba was always ruled by proxy. The Portuguese had established an administrative centre at Chake Chake but generally their rule was connected to other parts of East Africa.
The Mazruis of Mombasa ruled Pemba for a great period but were overpowered by Sayyid Said, who again ruled Pemba from Unguja. The tendency of Pemba being ruled from Unguja continued from the period of Sayyid Said up to the present times and due to its subordinate role, it has always been sidelined by what is happening at the metropole.

Geography and People

Unlike flat sandy Zanzibar, Pemba has a more diverse terrain that is hilly and fertile with some valleys, rivers and few fresh water pools. In the days of the Arab traders it was even referred to as ‘al Khuthera’ or ‘the Green Island’. Pemba’s infrastructure however is less developed than Unguja and less visited by tourists.
The culture is similar to that of Unguja including a 95% Muslim and Kiswahili-speaking population. As on Unguja or in Stone Town, respect the local customs by wearing clothing that covers both shoulders and knees.

Economy

Throughout much of the period when the sultans of Zanzibar held sway over the East African coast; it was Pemba, with its extensive clove plantations and agricultural base that provided the economic foundation for the archipelago’s dominance.

The Island’s tourism industry is small and low-key, and infrastructure is for the most part fairly basic, although this is slowly but steadily changing, with an ever-increasing number of up market hotels and more development on the way. There are several beautiful beaches in their natural state in and around the numerous inlets and coves. Cultivated crops range from rubber trees to cloves. Others include rice, coconut, bananas, and a lot of cassava. Unlike Unguja, Pemba has not been much cultivated, leaving beautiful views of green wild valleys leading down to the sea.

Getting There

There are everyday ferry departures to Pemba from Unguja and the fare goes for $30 per person for tourists. The ferries Sepideh and Talieh run a number of times a week for which tickets can be purchased at the ports on Pemba or Unguja. Larger ships such as the Mapinduzi that also go to Pemba but their schedules are irregular and unpredictable.
It is possible to take a dhow from Mombasa to Pemba because Kenyan law does permit tourists to travel in wooden boats. If you’re looking for a dhow ride, you may consider something shorter than the six to eight hour sail from Mombasa to Pemba.

Landing at Pemba is not quite the same experience as Unguja since there are fewer cars, people and bustle. There are several charter airlines that will fly to Pemba for a large group or may sell you a seat on a scheduled flight. Air Tanzania claims to fly to Pemba regularly, but the practice doesn’t match the claim. Although air travel is arguably quicker and more comfortable, it is more expensive, and for those who like adventure, the ferry trips are fun. Pemba has one airport located between Chake Chake and Mkoani that services charter flights but handles regularly flights to and from Pemba.

Overview
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of the Tanzania republic in East Africa. It embraces the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 km off the coast of the mainland, and as well consists of numerous other islands including the bigger two of Unguja and Pemba. Zanzibar characteristic of beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs – rich in marine diversity; and the historic Stone Town – said to be the only operational ancient town in East Africa. The coral reefs make Zanzibar an ideal location for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Location
Covering an area of 1464 sq km, Zanzibar is a small low lying island in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean, with its highest point at 120m. It is situated in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian mainland coast. Zanzibar Island occupies a surface area of approximately 650 sq miles with a width of 20miles and 60miles in length.

History of The Islands
Zanzibar has a long and unexpected history. Easily accessible for the people of the African mainland, the Zanzibar islands are believed to have been settled first by Africans, some 3-4 thousand years ago. Centuries afterward the island started a record of hosting outsiders from Egypt, Greece, Persia, Arabia, India, China and Europe. The earliest visitors to Zanzibar were Arab traders who are said to have arrived in the 8th century later starting up trade routes from Egypt, Roman Europe and the African coast. By the 7th century AD, Islam had made its way to Zanzibar by way of Arab and Persian immigrants who were fleeing political strife, war, and famine in their own lands.

The Arabs mixed with the local African population and along with trading goods, traded words as well, which ultimately culminated in a language called Kiswahili. The people referred to themselves and their culture as Swahili in regard the language. Extensive intermarriage between Shirazis and Africans gave rise to a coastal community with distinctive features, and a language derived in part from Arabic, which became known as Swahili.

For the following centuries the Arabs and Persians continued to trade with their homelands while incorporating into local society in Zanzibar and along the East African coast. Typical cargoes bound for Persia or Arabia consisted of gold, animal pelts, tortoise shells, ivory, ebony, and slaves; return ships contained porcelains, beads, and cloth.
The British became involved in missionary and trading activities in East Africa, and attempting to suppress the slave trade centered in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Today
Zanzibar is an island state within the United Republic of Tanzania, and has its own semi-autonomous government made up of a Revolutionary Council and House of Representatives. The present government is led by a Head of State – President Amani Karume and has an independent state-instituted body responsible for tourism promotion – the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism.

Economy of Zanzibar
Fishing and agriculture are the main economic activities of the local people. In particular, the islands produce cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and pepper hence its usual name “Spice Islands”. Zanzibar was once the world’s largest producer of cloves, and her economy was based on large incomes thus derived. Mush as cloves and other coconut products are still major exports; tourism has been placed as the primary forex earner, with more visitors traveling to Zanzibar each year.

Places of interest- the Islands
Zanzibar takes pride in a series of islands, the key being Pemba and Unguja.

Pemba – located about 50km north of Unguja and known also by its Arabic name, Al Khundra, Pemba is covered in steep hills full of palms, clove and rubber trees, rice paddies and the Ngezi Forest in the north. There are several beautiful beaches in their natural state in and around the numerous inlets and coves.

Unguja Island –the more populated, is better known as Zanzibar Island and is home to Stone Town an historic city of stone coral buildings. This is the main island of Zanzibar situated in the Indian Ocean about 42km east of Bagamoyo. This 85km somewhat undulating island goes for 20 long & 30km in width at some sections. Inhabitants are concentrated in the more fertile regions of the north and west. The eastern part of the island is arid and covered in coral rag making it agriculturally unappealing. However the beaches and the reefs on the eastern coast make it ideal for fishing and other tourist amenities.

Zanzibar Wildlife
There are no large wild animals in Zanzibar. The few forested areas for instance Jozani are inhabited by monkeys, bush-pigs and small antelopes. A range of species of mongoose however can be found on the island. There is variety of birdlife and butterflies in rural areas.

Unguja has a fauna which reflects its connection to the African mainland during the last ice age. Endemic mammals with continental relatives include the Zanzibar red colobus, a full species; the Zanzibar leopard, which is critically endangered and possibly extinct; and the recently described Zanzibar servaline genet. Pemba Island is separated from Unguja Island and the African continent by deep channels and has a correspondingly restricted fauna, confirming its comparative isolation from the mainland. Pemba Flying Fox is its most popular endemic.

Zanzibar Annual Music Festival
July of every year is a season of this festival and runs for a week. It features artists and shows from around the world. Most of the performances are held at the Old Fort but there are other venues in town such as at Bwawani Plaza. Ngoma and Taarab are big sell-outs during this festival but you can also catch performances from Arabia, Asia, and Europe

People, Language and Religion
The local people of Zanzibar are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of her colorful history. Its population is estimated at 800,000, with the largest concentration being Zanzibar City with an approximate of 100,000 residents. It consists of people from African, Asian, Omani and Persian ancestries. The population of the archipelago is estimated at over 740,000 while that of Unguja is estimated at almost 450,000, forty per cent of which live in Stone Town.

The people of Zanzibar (Zanzibaris) speak Swahili a language which is spoken extensively in East Africa. This is the official and national language of Tanzania although English is also spoken. In fact many believe that the purest form is spoken in Zanzibar as it is the birth place of the language. A percentage of the population also has a working knowledge of Arabic.

Zanzibaris are predominantly Muslim, about 95% of the population being followers of Islam. The remaining percentage is a mix of Christians, Hindus and followers of various other religions.

Weather and Climate of Zanzibar
Zanzibar enjoys ideal holiday weather year-in year-out. The summer’s heat is often calmed by windy conditions, tending in pleasant sea breezes, principally on the East and North and coasts. Being near to the equator, the islands are warm all year round, but officially, summer and winter peak in December and June respectively. Zanzibar is blessed with an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily. January through March is generally hot and dry with little rainfall. April through June is wet because of the long rains which start to taper off in May.

Short rains can occur in November but are characterized by short showers which do not last long. The long rains normally occur in April and May although this is often referred to as the ‘Green Season’ and it typically doesn’t rain every day during that time.

The perfect season for visiting Zanzibar runs from July to October since the average temperature is 25 C, the air is dry and breezy and there is little rainfall. Prolonged rains “mwaka” usually come in March and last peak in late May.

Travel Tips
Arrival by boat or by air will land you in the immigration line but sometimes, depending on time of day and day of the week, you may not have to go through immigration at the port. There the customs check is sporadic, but it is quick when required. Entering Zanzibar by air requires proof of a yellow fever vaccination. You will not be allowed on Zanzibar without this card, but it is not always checked at the port. You should have the vaccination if traveling in East Africa whether or not it is required.

Getting There
By Air; Traveling to and from Zanzibar by air is possible via Air Tanzania, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines. These have regular flights to Zanzibar. Others are Air Zimbabwe, Egypt Air, Air India, Air Malawi, South African Airways, Royal Swazi Airlines and others. Schedules vary from season to season, and some flights are only once or twice a week. If coming from Europe, it can be tough if not impossible to find direct flights. Direct flights are usually in the form of charters from Italy, except for the charters operated by Air Europe and Swiss Air that fly weekly during the high seasons. All other European-originating flights will get you as far as Mombasa, or Dar-es-Salaam or Muscat, Oman, from which you’ll need connecting flights to Zanzibar.

By Sea; There are several sea ferry companies that ply the waters between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. The largest of these is Azam Marine. You can book ferry tickets through a local tour operator.
